Eucalyptus globulus and E. nitens are the major species being established to meet the 2020 Vision (Anon 1999) of trebling Australia's plantation estate. Seedling mortality and/or reduced growth after planting, linked to the transition from ideal growing conditions in the nursery to stressful conditions (high drought and browsing risk) at the planting sites, significantly increase the costs of plantation production. By investigating physiological mechanisms of seedlings and their responses to drought and browsing stress during establishment in the field, methods for the production of seedlings acclimated to drought or browsing stress will be developed. The research outcomes will help maximise the financial return on over $28 M per annum being invested by the 8 project partners in seedling production and planting over 80, 000 ha per year for the next 19 years to meet the requirements of Vision 2020.Read moreRead less
Developing eucalypt plantations for pharmaceutical flavanone production. The project aims to produce the tools and knowledge required to establish plantations of mallee eucalypts for the production of pinocembrin and structurally related flavanones. The project aims to produce the tools and knowledge required to establish plantations of mallee eucalypts for the production of pinocembrin and structurally related flavanones. This is important because these flavanones have been shown to have a range of medicinal applications, including treatment of diseases of the central nervous system. The research plans to focus on producing and establishing trees with improved flavanone content and growth rates, and on understanding the biochemical mechanisms that underlie flavanone production and structural modification. Expected outcomes include supporting the development of profitable plantations in rural Australia and the establishment of plantations more widely in southern Australia, especially on marginal land.Read moreRead less

This is important because mallees have considerable potential for sustainable essential oil and biomass production in low rainfall regions, and they can sequester considerable amounts of carbon in their below-ground parts. The project intends to produce trees with improved oil quality and yields through chromosome doubling and breeding, and to dissect the mechanisms that underpin essential oil production through the production of mutants and studies of the main monoterpene producing enzyme.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish the scientific basis for silvicultural treatments of eucalypt plantations for clear wood production. While eucalypt plantations in north-eastern NSW have dramatically increased in recent times, the knowledge base for the production clear, branch-free wood from the tree species used does not exist. A physiological, mechanistic understanding of crown and canopy dynamics as well as branch shedding will form the scientific foundation for stand manipulations such as pruning and thinning to enhance wood quality. Project outcomes will provide the basis for a stand management simulation model for the most important eucalypt species.Read moreRead less
Profitable plantations of blue mallee for essential oil production. This project will develop the methods and knowledge required for establishing plantations of eucalypts (blue mallee) with very high and economically viable yields of eucalyptus oil. It is expected that the research will underpin an expansion of the essential oil industry both in Victoria and elsewhere in Australia.

ARC Training Centre for Forest Value. This training centre aims to build capacity to transform the Australian forest products sector by providing advanced training and research. In particular, it aims to train a workforce capable of improving resource utilisation and creating value at all stages along the forest-to-building supply chain. This should allow the sector to exploit emerging markets in the use of renewable materials. The centre’s partners range from forest managers to architects and engineers, to ensure a flow of information from forest to design and manufacture. The centre’s research, and the industry-ready graduates produced, should increase industry productivity, profitability and sustainability, and enable increased returns from Australia’s forests.Read moreRead less

Outcomes from this project will potentially facilitate doubling of Australia's forest plantations, eliminate the annual trade deficit of $2 billion in forest products; ensure the long term environmental and productive sustainability of our agricultural production systems; diversify and drought proof farm income through the introduction of perennial tree crops whose yield and harvest is independent of short term seasonal fluctuations; and re-invigorate the economy of rural Australia brought about by investment in new, inland forest and wood processing industries.Read moreRead less

Dryland salinity is an issue of national significance due to its impact on primary industries which contribute billions of dollars to our economy. However, millions of hectares of arable land are now affected by salinity, with devastating effects on crops, native plants, water quality and wildlife. This project works with the rural community and exploits the unique gene pool of certain Australian salinity-tolerant plants for environmental benefits (revegetation, salinity control) and simultaneous economic returns through using these for timber and perennial fodder. The project thus addresses the national priorities of preventing the expansion of salinity, putting it to sustainable uses and preserving biodiversity.Read moreRead less
