Summary
Recognising the pain of others: gendered displacement, memory and identity in Bosnian refugee diaspora. The project examines the role of gender in forced migration and how violence against Bosnian women during the 1992-95 war has affected their settlement in Australia, Austria and the USA. The outcomes of the project will help guide the formulation of immigration/integration policy in these countries and facilitate better understanding of refugee women in diaspora.
Translocal Identities in the Malay World: Travel, Commerce, Community Building and Religious Reform in Insular and Peninsular Southeast Asia. First, the project contributes to an understanding of the region. Second, understanding how different governments in the region have and are managing religious and cultural diversity may provide lessons for Australia. Third, a study of migration within the region can make a significant contribution to debates within Australia on immigration from Asia. Lives in limbo: An anthropology of refugee experiences in Malaysia. This project will produce the first comprehensive ethnography of Malaysia's refugee and asylum seeker population. This diverse population is of key strategic significance to Australia's migration policy. Many of the refugees and asylum seekers living in Malaysia are in transit, awaiting permanent resettlement to a Western country. It will explain how and why many non-Arab Muslims are drawn towards the Arab world, by virtue of what it can offer them and of what the alternatives are increasingly failing to offer, ....Arabian Africans or African Arabs?
