It informs public debate and official dialogues in Australia and Europe about the ways in which the relationship may be fostered in future. Project findings contribute an understanding of the common ground and mutual support of Australia and the EU in international organisations such as WTO, and the further development of Australian and EU policies that will benefit bilateral trade and investment in both Australia and the EU. The research results will inform Australian government agencies in identifying policy options for further constructive relationships between Australia and the EU.Read moreRead less

The patent system should be globally consistent; simple and cost effective to use; parsimonious in the grant of monopoly rights; and provide a level playing field for all inventors. Existing empirical evidence indicates that the patent system is currently inefficient and this has negative effects on our Research and Development sector.Read moreRead less
Biosecurity or Trade Barrier? The Economic Costs of Quarantine. Agricultural, fishing and forestry groups are united in supporting strict biosecurity measures, such as quarantine, in order to prevent any possibility of the importation of diseases. However, the importation of certain products from "diseased" countries does not necessarily mean that the disease will also be imported, and even if imported it may not result in the destruction of the local industry. The "diseased" countries obviously remain competitive if they are able to export the products. Foreign quarantine restrictions are restricting Australia's access to international markets. The costs to consumers of the current zero-tolerance policy has not been quantified. The costs may indeed exceed the benefit.Read moreRead less

This research aims to model the economic implications of Korean re-unification and explore the spill-overs to key economies in the region, including Australia. The approach is understood to be first to develop a model for the existing North Korean economy in collaboration with South Korean researchers at Korea University. This model is intended to be embedded in an existing global economic model. The project aims to then explore scenarios of integration between North and South Korea focusing on changing production structure, development in human capital formation, technology transfer, immigration flows within a unified Korea and the impact on trade and financial flows that may result from different scenarios of how unification will proceed.Read moreRead less
International coalitions for climate change mitigation: the role of carbon market linkages and trade restrictions. This project uses cooperative game theory, implementation theory and agent-based modelling to investigate how coalitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could be formed and maintained among countries. Applications include the role of carbon market linkage and trade policy, in countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
