All sorts of games and sports could use better systems for rating and ranking teams. This is as true in sports-mad Australia as any other country. Improved and more accessible rating systems across a variety of activities should encourage the general public to take a greater interest in the mathematics, statistics, information theory and machine learning behind the systems. With Cadability as our Australia-based international industry partner, the global use of these systems will be to Australia's economic advantage. Having a more accurate rating system which is wider-reaching both in the number of sports and games and the number of participants per sport and game should also encourage greater participation from the general public.

    Summary
Building intelligence into online video services by learning user interests. This project aims to build an intelligent video streaming service by characterising users’ view interest patterns and predict user interest changes through learning data from Internet to address the challenge caused by astronomic video population. The outcomes of the project will be of great values for users and our society by intelligently filtering out valueless, harmful, illegal and unwanted videos in advance.

Effective and efficient protection of personal privacy in big personal data. Personal privacy protection is becoming increasingly important as personal data is increasingly being hosted in cloud servers, accumulating as big personal data. This project aims to develop innovative solutions for effective and efficient to address the issue of protection of personal privacy. Current approaches are neither effective nor efficient, and lack robustness. The project is expected to enhance theoretical foundation of personal privacy protection in big data and cloud, and deliver an effective and efficient personal privacy protection framework with associated algorithms and prototype. These outcomes will help to protect fast-growing privacy sensitive personal data hosting and applications on cloud servers.

    Summary
Business goals and analytics driven management of cloud computing based information technology infrastructure. Businesses and government are dependent on the reliability of their information technology (IT) infrastructure to provide services to customers. While cloud computing offers a promising IT platform, greater resilience is needed. This project will develop techniques to reliably manage cloud platforms, and thus improve the competitiveness of Australian business.

Secure user authentication with continuous adaptive risk evaluation. Users typically authenticate to any given system only once - when they first access it (for example, through providing a password or fingerprint). Secure user authentication with continuous adaptive risk evaluation. Users typically authenticate to any given system only once - when they first access it (for example, through providing a password or fingerprint). The prevalence of single sign-on further allows this single authentication to be sufficient for access to multiple systems. Thus an adversary can obtain a large degree of access from stealing a single password, hijacking a user's session, or even simply borrowing their phone. This project aims to develop a continuous authentication approach based on user behaviour - typical interactions plus biometrics (for example, keystroke dynamics) - combined with a risk adaptive assessment of the resources being accessed, resulting in re-authentication requests in the event of a suspected compromise.

Cost efficient scheduling of big data application workflows on cloud through information correlation. Information correlation in and between big data application workflows scheduled on the cloud can help to significantly reduce overall scheduling costs by avoiding the execution of many correlated workflow activities. This project aims to systematically investigate such correlation for cost efficient scheduling. The expected outcomes are: establishing information correlation based scheduling research and practical solutions for this important cloud and big data research area; benefiting key big data application areas on the cloud, such as hospitals, insurance companies and government information services; and helping to maintain Australia at the forefront of cloud and big data research with innovative industry applications.

Virtual Environments for Improved Enterprise Software Deployment. This project aims to improve quality assurance for enterprise IT. Enterprise IT systems are highly interconnected and interdependent — a failure in one system can cause a cascade of failures across multiple systems, bringing business to a standstill. The project aims to create new technologies to automate the provisioning of virtual deployment environments to test the enterprise systems. In particular, it aims to develop new methods for the automatic analysis of service interaction traces and the generation of accurate executable service models, without requiring explicit knowledge of them. The automatic analysis and generation should reduce development cost for enterprise IT systems and increase system quality and reliability. The new software deployment technologies from this project aim to significantly reduce the time, effort and cost of system quality assurance activities in software development organisations, and yet produce higher-quality software leading to uninterrupted business operation in end-user organisations across all sectors.

    Summary
A fast and effective automated insider threat detection and prediction system. Threats from insiders directly compromises the security, privacy and integrity of Australian e-commerce, large databases and communication channels. This project will provide an essential step in combating this criminal activity by developing methods to detect such threats and secure the public's information against exposure and identity theft.
