Encoding and Communicating Navigable Soundfields. While sound recording is commonplace, it is not currently practical to completely record a sound space such that the experience can be reproduced at a chosen 'listening point'. This is a significant restriction for audio applications in the entertainment, surveillance and virtual/mixed reality areas. The project will research novel and practical solutions to this problem and offers a significant conceptual advance in the transmission of complex audio scenes. This project will build fundamental new technology and IP for Australia in the digital media and audio space, one of the fastest growing sectors of our economy.

Broadcasting 3D Audio: Recording, Transmission, and Playback. With the current state of the art, a performance at the Sydney Opera House cannot be recorded and broadcast such that you can listen to it as if you are in the best seat of the house. The goal of our project is to develop the ultimate form of multi-channel audio broadcasting to create this experience. We will develop and implement effective systems for recording, broadcasting and playback of 3D audio in three different scenarios: individual headphone reproduction; small loudspeaker array reproduction; and large loudspeaker array reproduction. We will create optimal recording techniques and broadcasting software for each of these playback techniques.

A Positioning System for Mobile Phones. This project aims to produce a positioning system that integrates a mobile phone-based technique developed in Australia, known as Seekerzone, with GPS. The combination of Seekerzone and GPS delivers a system capable of reporting whether children or valuables are in a safe location. As security becomes an increasing priority, this system can operate indoors or outdoors, and provides many solutions. Seekerzone has already attracted international interest, an .... Seekerzone has already attracted international interest, and coupled with GPS, its applications and export opportunities will multiply. The target product will provide effective and convenient security, while its developemnt will provide important research training in Australia's drastically under-resourced spatial industry.

The Interplay of Feedback Control and Digital Communications. This project deals with two research topics in digital communications and control. The first is concerned with feedback communications for control systems, aiming to develop new design methods for network-based automation and control. The second studies new decoding and detection algorithms for digital communications. Applications of the proposed research work include network-based industrial control, wireless communication devices, a .... The Interplay of Feedback Control and Digital Communications. This project deals with two research topics in digital communications and control. The first is concerned with feedback communications for control systems, aiming to develop new design methods for network-based automation and control. The second studies new decoding and detection algorithms for digital communications. Applications of the proposed research work include network-based industrial control, wireless communication devices, and high density digital storage media. The cross-fertilisation of control systems and digital communications will help strengthen Australia's research expertise in the National Research Priority area "Information and Communications Technology" (ICT).
