Structural and Biological Chemistry of Marine Natural Products. Australia's unique marine biodiversity provides a source of novel biologically active compounds with potential for development as pharmaceuticals. This program seeks to explore the structural and biological chemistry of novel marine compounds from marine invertebrates and to evaluate their potential benefit is training of scientists in organic and biological chemistry and advancement of drug-discovery from Australian biodiversity.
Ecology and evolution in dynamic systems: a new approach to conserving Australian biodiversity. Australia has different ecosystems and different species than the rest of the world, and we need a different approach to conserve and manage our unique animals. This project will develop a new, specifically Australian-oriented approach to conservation biology.
The diversity and assembly of optics in nature. Optics, such as the design of new coloured reflectors, is a research strength for Australia. A reason for this is the potential for application - optical devices can be found far and wide in our everyday lives, from security devices on banknotes (holograms), to computer monitors (LCDs). An interesting parallel exists in nature - animals possess similar optical devices to those we use.
