Another direct potential benefit to Australia from this work is an enhancement of the country's international research reputation. The ANU is one of the world-leading research institutions in geochemistry, geochronology and experimental petrology and the outcomes of this project will ensure that Australia remains at the forefront in these disciplines.Read moreRead less
Deep Crustal Section Through a Late Archaean Orogen (Greenland): Archaean Crustal Sutures, Abyssal Peridotites and Gold. Did plate tectonics operate in Earth's early times - the Archaean (before 2500 million years ago)? This is important for understanding Australia's rich Archaean gold mineralisation. Using plate tectonics, young mountains like the European Alps formed when once distant continents collided. The project will investigate the origins of a deeply-eroded, superbly-exposed Archaean Greenland mountain belt and its gold mineralisation. This is to establish whether it represents a deep section through an Archaean continent-continent collision formed via ancient plate tectonics and also to provide insight into Australia's important Archaean gold deposits and to produce models to help search for more gold.Read moreRead less
Experimental constraints on Platinum-Group Element geochemistry: developing lithogeochemical exploration tools for nickel-sulfides in mafic and ultramafic systems. Nickel contributes approximately $2 billion per year to Australia's export income. Nickel contributes approximately $2 billion per year to Australia's export income. Currently 80% of that is coming from sulfide deposits, which are expected to be exhausted within thirty years barring significant new discoveries. Discovery rates have been declining for two decades, as the 'easy' targets have been found, despite a broad increase in nickel exploration expenditure to current levels of around $50 million per year. There is a pressing need for new data sets and techniques to allow industry to target new discoveries based on limited drill sampling of potential host rocks. This project forms part of a broader program to harness the igneous geochemistry of the platinum group elements as a powerful pathfinder in nickel exploration.Read moreRead less
Magmatic processes, volatiles and ore formation. A major current source of Australia's export wealth derives from mining of gold and copper ores. Many of our largest ore deposits, such as those at Mt Isa and Broken Hill, formed in paleo- environments equivalent to the active submarine volcanic arcs which we are proposing to study. Modern systems yield the vital clues to explore intelligently for fossil equivalents. We propose a two-pronged approach in world-renowned analytical and experimental laboratories to understand active processes that will guide experimental simulations under controlled conditions. Results are critical for national economic advantage and the maintenance of Australian Earth science in the forefront of global research effort.

Advancing diamond exploration - novel techniques for the interpretation of indicator minerals. Diamond production is an important industry in Australia, with a total export value in 2004-05 of $650 million. Most of this production comes from the Argyle Mine in Western Australia, which may be nearing the end of its productivity. Therefore, there is a need to reinvigorate exploration for diamond in Australia, in order for new and significant deposits to be discovered. Most of this production comes from the Argyle Mine in Western Australia, which may be nearing the end of its productivity. Therefore, there is a need to reinvigorate exploration for diamond in Australia, in order for new and significant deposits to be discovered. The outcomes of this proposal will provide diamond exploration companies with improved mineralogical tools to assess the likely diamond grade of parts of the lithosphere sampled by kimberlite or lamproite magmas, thus better directing exploration strategies.Read moreRead less

This project will construct a computationally explicit model of movements in the solid Earth for the past 150 million years, to study the Earth as a complex system during the collision that produced the Alpine-Himalayan mountain belt. This is the youngest collisional mountain belt on Earth, and at times it stretched from Spain to New Zealand. Earth Scientists want to understand the processes that took place to make it, in particular the role of ribbon continents. As a result of this work ordinary Australians will be able to better perceive their interactions with their nearest neighbours.Read moreRead less

High-temperature, high-pressure, water-rich fluids play a central role in many geological processes. However, these fluids are extremely difficult to characterise: although their effects are evident in many rocks, the fluids themselves are too reactive to be preserved. Here several novel techniques are described for studying the compositions and thermodynamic properties of hydrous fluids and silicate melts over a wide range of geologically relevant conditions. The results of this study will greatly improve the understanding of geological processes as widely diverse as volcanism, ore deposition and metamorphism.Read moreRead less
Multi-arrival wavefront tracking for improved seismic imaging of the Earth's interior. The complex nature of many seismic wavetrains can usually be attributed to the multi-pathing of elastic wave energy between source and receiver. The complex nature of many seismic wavetrains can usually be attributed to the multi-pathing of elastic wave energy between source and receiver. Typical analysis, e.g., seismic tomography, uses few of these arrivals. This project is designed to improve the exploitation of the information on seismograms by tracking the various arrivals in complex media to provide better constraints on Earth structure. To achieve this goal, new methods for constructing multi-arrival wavefronts will be developed and applied to a range of seismic data from Tasmania to produce high resolution images of the crust and upper mantle.

The short-lived isotope 226Ra provides a powerful new tool for constraining the nature of melting and magma/fluid transport processes within the Earth. Conversely, Os isotopes can track ancient recycled components, core-mantle boundary interaction and date organic-rich sediments. The installation of a high-sensitivity thermal ionisation mass spectrometer at Macquarie University will enable research in these exciting endeavours and enhance a world-class analytical facility with widespread and lasting utility. Planned research will constrain deep earth processes, magma/water transport processes, magma-mantle/chromatography, volcanic hazards, ore deposit formation, controversial climatic models, soil erosion and early planet differentiation.Read moreRead less
