Ischaemic heart disease is a major cause of death in developed countries. Sudden cardiac death is precipitated by lethal irregularities in heart rhythm that originate around the scar tissue that forms within the heart after a heart attack. During this fellowship, A/Prof Meretoja will 1) use blood biomarkers, telemedicine, and ambulance-based imaging to streamline the time-critical therapy of stroke thrombolysis, 2) run a pharmaceutical trial of the drug tranexamic acid in intracerebral haemorrhage, and 3) use stroke registries in Australia and Finland to disseminate best practices in stroke care pathways.

Summary
Stroke affects 15 million people worldwide each year. At present, the diagnosis and treatment of stroke is not optimal. The use of gene profiling may provide us with information that could allow us to more accurately identify individuals at risk of stroke, predict stroke outcome and effectively treat stroke patients. In addition, by using a targeted approach to therapy we have the potential to reduce brain swelling and improve outcome following stroke with neuroprotective agents.

Summary
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of physical disability in children and it is well recognised that the brain injury that underlies CP occurs during pregnancy or around the time of birth. Stem cells isolated from umbilical cord blood offer a promising new therapy for children with CP. This proposal will explore the mechanism of how cord blood stem cells can reduce brain inflammation and damage caused by hypoxia-ischemia, an event known to lead to cerebral palsy.

Ventricular tachycardia is a dangerous heart rhythm that usually occurs in people with prior heart attacks. These people often have scarring on their heart and the tachycardia occurs due to electrical activity forming a circuit around the scar. This study will examine the factors that cause ventricular tachycardia to begin by looking at the characteristics of the scarring.
