Using current religious, political, and social conditions as contrasting environments the proposed research will investigate the competing theories of Islamic fundamentalism, sociological correlates of Muslim religiosity and public influence of religious institutions in contrasting institutional configurations by focusing on the Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey and Nigeria. This will be achieved through a study of random/purposive samples of respondents in the three countries using survey methodology. This project will assist in the processes of reconciliation, by fostering a sense of a shared history, and increasing public awareness of the complexity of race relations histories in Australia. It will redress a significant gap in Australian knowledge and literature. A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. It will use an innovative methodology to access emotions amongst a group who did not leave traditional 'feeling' sources, such as letters and diaries, to create a pict ....A History of Intimate Relationships in Scotland: Emotion and Family among the Lower Orders, 1661-1830. Nine carefully chosen case studies allow examination of political participation and partisanship in settings traditional and modern, urban and rural. The project asks how, and whether, a democratic theory arising from a politics of rural localism retained meaning for citizens in very different social settings. Understanding how political identities were created in the past may help us identify ways to increase the saliency of politics in ordinary lives today.
