Summary
Current drug treatments can not eradicate HIV from the body. This is because HIV can infect and establish a latent or “silent” infection in long-lived cells of the immune system that can re-emerge out of these cells when drug treatment is stopped. This project aims to find out how these cells become infected and what type of HIV is infecting them. The results from this study will help us better understand the latent infection and will help researchers design ways to eradicate HIV.

There have been dramatic increases in the use of pharmaceutical opioids (PO) for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP), despite limited data on their long-term effectiveness and an increase in associated harm. This Fellowship provides critical new data to inform both clinicians and policymakers on the global extent of PO for CNCP, trajectories of problematic use and associated morbidity and a unique evaluation of the impact of real-time prescription monitoring program to reduce these harms.

Summary
This research aims to develop new treatments for allergic diseases such as asthma and allergic rhinitis, which remain significant public health problems in Australia. We will develop new therapies with the potential to completely suppress acute and chronic allergic disease targeting a common receptor protein that controls multiple facets of allergic inflammation. We will test antibodies intended to treat human asthma using a novel mouse strain expressing the human form of this receptor.
The fundamental problem with pain is that it cannot be seen. We can see injury, but pain and injury are quite often not related. Brain imaging has demonstrated consistent patterns of activity when we feel pain, and long-term changes that happen in chronic, i.e. persistent, painful disorders. This project will use the best technology available to investigate the basics of how our brains perceive pain, and to shed light on some of the brain mechanisms that underpin chronic pain.
