Summary
Media and transient migrants in Australia and Singapore: mapping identities and networks. This project is a journey of discovery into the migration experience of transient migrants (international students and skilled professionals) in Australia and Singapore through their use and engagement with the media (screen and digital). This project will help us understand permanent migration patterns in Australia.
Valuing Web Series: Economic, Industrial, Cultural and Social Value. This project investigates the value of web series as a form of online screen entertainment characterised by original and diverse content produced by emerging creatives. It will deploy the theoretical frame of ‘total value’ to assess the role and viability of web series: value accrued as career development opportunities for digital content makers; value accrued by the audiences who consume web series; and the value accrued by t ....Valuing Web Series: Economic, Industrial, Cultural and Social Value. Digital photography: mediation, memory and visual communication. This project aims to address the social impact of major shifts in the production, distribution, viewing and storage of photographic images which have profoundly altered their everyday use. By adopting an interdisciplinary, user-centred approach to digitally networked photography, the project will provide a more holistic understanding of how photographs mediate communication, sociality and memory in the present. Social media influencers as conduits of knowledge in Australia and Asia. This project aims to evaluate how social media influencers can become conduits to communicate information among young people between Australia and East Asia. As icons on the internet who are experts in holding attention and amplifying content, influencers have expanded from being mere commercial enterprises to being conduits of public service information by reaching wide, diverse, and sometimes marginalised youth audiences ....Social media influencers as conduits of knowledge in Australia and Asia. This project aims to evaluate how social media influencers can become conduits to communicate information among young people between Australia and East Asia. Online Money and Fantasy Games - an applied ethnographic study into the new entrepreneurial communities and their underlying designs. Modern social and fantasy games using online money are multi-billion dollar business, but little is known about them, their developers, or impacts on privacy, identity and monetisation of relationships. This is the first study to investigate these concerns and to relate fieldwork results to the simultaneous building of a social gaming platform.
Listening in: improving recognition of community media to support democratic participation and wellbeing. New media forms and the community media sector in Australia provide increasing opportunities for diverse communities to speak up, share stories and find a voice. This project analyses the political listening practices necessary to support the potential for voice in this changing media environment. The project aims to contribute to community wellbeing by asking to what extent community media ....Listening in: improving recognition of community media to support democratic participation and wellbeing. A hand up: Disrupting the communication of intergenerational welfare dependency. Some families rely permanently on welfare support and communicate this dependency to the next generation. Children growing up in these families find it difficult to break out of poverty. With the help of twelve families and members of the St Vincent de Paul Society (Western Australia), this project aims to create ethnographies which illuminate turning points and opportunities for change. The project will use innovative temporal methods to assess the influence of extreme nationalist discourses on mainstream political discussion in Australia. It will develop computational tools to unpick the relationship between digital media, speed and increasing polarisation in political discourse. Expected outcomes include a dataset describing extreme discourses in Australia, an empirical evaluation of the influence of extremism within mainstream ....Extremism and the Australian National Imaginary.
