This project aims to explain the changing patterns of regional economic performance across Australia between 2001-2011 in the context of two developments: major structural shifts in world trade and commodity prices spawning massive mining growth and negative exchange rate impacts elsewhere (for example, manufacturing); and the financial crisis ending the credit boom leaving east coast economies struggling. A Universal Nano Tribometer for Surface and Thin Film Characterisation. The proposed infrastructure will be of major benefit to a large number of ARC funded research projects involving chracterisation of materials at four universities UOW,QUT, UNSW and CDU. The project will extend the research capability of the participating researchers and facilitate innovative projects and new research direction in advanced materials processing in the nano/micro scale. Investment in flexible learning options (FLOs) for young people who have disengaged from schooling requires understanding of how they work and evidence about their economic and social value. This project will provide both through innovative and integrated methods, analysing FLO sites across three Australian states and the Northern Territory.

Collaborative remote access will be developed for sophisticated instrumentation, including instruments planned for the Replacement Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron. A structure database service with cross disciplinary content and versatile visualisation and analysis capabilities will further exemplify smart information use.
