Biosynthetic and evolutionary pathways of red-shifted chlorophylls. This project will provide vital information for the roles of chlorophyll modification. Red-shifted chlorophylls have the potential to increase the efficiency of photosynthesis by extending the spectral limits. The switchable biosynthetic pathway of chlorophyll f will open up a new opportunity for developing new technologies.
The response of mitochondria to oxidative stress in plants. Crops encounter many situations in their environment which place them under stress. Crops encounter many situations in their environment which place them under stress. Reactive oxygen molecules produced in these situations act as messengers to trigger defence mechanisms but also cause cellular damage. Mitochondria are the subcellular compartments involved in energy production and are essential for plant development and growth. However, they also have been implicated in the response of plants to stress and pathogen attack, and in production of reactive oxygen molecules. This proposal seeks to investigate how mitochondria are involved in these processes, focusing on the role of terminal oxidases. Potential outcomes include crops better able to cope with environmental stress.Read moreRead less

Australia's serious environmental problems, soil salinity and acidity, may be greatly affected by rising atmospheric CO2 and irrigation strategies. This will occur if the movement of soil water and nitrate changes with transpiration. We will generate different transpiration rates by varying atmospheric CO2 above pastures and irrigation strategies in vineyards. The commercial partner's newly developed soil sensors allow, for the first time, simultaneous 3-D measurement of soil water and nitrate in real-time. The results will answer long-standing questions about impacts of transpiration rates on plant nitrogen uptake and generate valuable new knowledge for sustainable management of pastures and horticultural crops. This project will investigate molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis in Chl d with the view to applying our findings in biotechnology and artificial photosynthesis. We will use a variety of molecular biology, proteomics and physical techniques to probe the bonding of Chl d to binding proteins. Synthetic peptide maquettes will provide a model to develop this understanding. Only two chlorophylls (a and d) have so far been found to take part in the primary reactions of photosynthesis. This research will grow our understanding of this pivotal process and underpin future developments in artificial photosynthesis and in the photonics industry.Read moreRead less

Sydney basin multi-purpose spectral analysis facility for evolutionary and ecological studies. This near infrared spectroscopy facility at The University of New South Wales will serve the Sydney area biological research community. Near infrared spectroscopy provides quick and robust estimates of key properties of animal and plant tissues, such as age, species and chemical composition.
The use of molecular sponges to inhibit small Ribonucleic acid activity in plants. The deletion of gene activity is the most powerful way to understand gene function; however for genes encoding small Ribonucleic acids (RNAs) no current methodology can efficiently achieve this. Here, we aim to develop a gene silencing technology for small RNA encoding genes, which can be utilised to determine their function and used for biotechnological applications.

The tuneable diode laser system will facilitate projects with major environmental benefits to Australia. Projects will provide major insights into Australia's CO2 balance. This will improve our ability to predict whether ecosystems are net sources or sinks for CO2 -- information that underpins Australia's greenhouse gas balance. The tuneable diode laser system will also benefit Australia's economy via enhancing understanding of agricultural and forest production, a key portion of our GDP. These economic benefits will stem from new knowledge about the limitations to plant growth and the water-use efficiency of plants. Read moreRead less

Australian landscape management faces significant challenges from existing land practices and the effects of climate change. Effective management and targeted remediation requires an understanding of the processes that drive ecosystem function. The development of broadly applicable tools for the monitoring of plant and ecosystem health is therefore of considerable interest. Flexibility in core processes of plant function represents a significant opportunity to develop such tools. With a focus on plant metabolites, this project will characterise how Australian trees alter the allocation of resources to cope with environmental changes and produce metabolite-based selective traits for stress tolerance in Australian trees. The role of chlorophyll f in photosynthesis. The knowledge of energetic limits of oxygenic photosynthesis will provide opportunities for improving the efficiency of photosynthesis by using a wider range of the solar spectrum. This project aims to understand the roles of newly discovered chlorophyll f in central photoreactions and its biosynthesis.
Improving plant reproductive success under heat stress: A sweet approach. This project aims to determine how genetic manipulation of cell wall invertase (CWIN) activity could regulate pollen germination, elongation and fruit set under heat stress using tomato as a model. Plant reproductive processes are highly susceptible to heat stress, which often leads to pollination failure and fruit and seed abortion, hence irreversible yield loss. Research has established that CWIN-mediated sugar metabolism and signaling may play crucial roles in pollen growth and fruit set under heat stress. The intended outcome is the generation of critical knowledge that will advance understanding on reproductive development under heat stress, thereby providing significant benefits, such as novel ideas and solutions for improving crop yield.Read moreRead less
