Using Diffusion MRI For Understanding The Relationship Between Memory Decline And Corticothalamic Tracts

Funding Amount
$57,578.00
Summary
Stroke populations are at a risk of dementia. Structural changes have been demonstrated to precede cognitive changes, providing a potential for early diagnosis and intervention. Magnetic resonance imaging markers of structural connectivity are powerful predictors of dementia. As a longitudinal study, this proposal has the unique advantage that I will be able to detect changes in post-stroke brain networks in the 3 years after stroke. This raises the potential for future clinical application.
Speech Pathology Intervention For Young Offenders With Language Impairment
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$107,182.00
Summary
Male young offenders are at high risk of undetected oral language impairments. This study will assess language impaired young offenders, and evaluate the efficacy of speech pathology intervention to improve oral language skills. The study will also evaluate whether this intervention can enhance other interventions and rehabilitation, and reduce the chances of reoffending, through the development of prosocial behaviours and characteristics.
Accelerated Longterm Forgetting In Children With Genetic Generalised Epilepsy: An Investigation Of The Temporal Trajectory And Contribution Of Executive Skills.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$107,204.00
Summary
The aim of this study is to determine which factors influence forgetting in typically developing children and in children with epilepsy. Specifically, we want to establish how forgetting occurs over time and whether it is influenced by other cognitive/thinking skills, such as strategies used to remember information, attention or resistance to interference. Moreover, we are interested in whether retention rates are affected by different types of learning materials (i.e. visual versus verbal).
BDNF Genotype And Emotional Memory In Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$108,902.00
Summary
This project addresses the question of why some people develop PTSD following trauma and others don’t. It will assess the influence of genetics (specifically a genotype that influences Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) on emotional memory processes as distressing emotional memories are a core symptom of PTSD. If we find that people with a particular genetic profile have a greater risk of developing intrusive memories after trauma, this will help us better target treatment for those individuals.
Clinical Genetics Studies Of Speech And Language Disorders In Large Families.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$160,368.00
Summary
Childhood speech and language disorders are common and may have negative long term outcomes. We have a limited understanding of what causes these disorders, which impacts our ability to manage and treat those affected. This project will utilise large families to investigate causes and clinical features of speech and language disorders. This is an exciting and relatively under-research area, and has the potential to lead to improved outcomes for children affected with speech and language disorder ....Childhood speech and language disorders are common and may have negative long term outcomes. Caregiving Practices And Child Development: A Cross-cultural Perspective.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$109,487.00
Summary
This program of research will investigate the cross-cultural differences in the types and prevalence of cognitive and socio-emotional caregiving practices in a community sample of parents in a low income country. The influence of cultural beliefs, caregiver distress and the common challenges experienced by caregivers will be explored and it will also test the effectiveness of an innovative psychological intervention to facilitate optimal child development.
Investigating The Role Of TGF-beta In Resident Memory T Cell Induction And Maintenance
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$92,495.00
Summary
I am a research scientist interested in the immune system. Specifically, I intend to investigate immunological memory, which is the basis of vaccination. This refers to the ability of certain immune cells such as T and B cells to ‘remember’ a pathogen, so that a rapid and enhanced response can be generated upon re-infection with the same pathogen. This can be investigated by experimental techniques such as flow cytometry, histology and confocal microscopy on cells from infected mouse tissue.
Cognitive And Psychosocial Functioning In Patients With Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsies
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$123,143.00
Summary
Children born extremely preterm are at risk of struggling at school and falling behind normal educational milestones, and having emotional problems such as anxiety. This study aims to see whether anxiety affects these children’s ability to learn and use new information. It will also determine whether an intervention targeting these thinking skills is less useful in children with higher levels of anxiety.
Identifying The Molecular Basis Of Memory B Cell Function And Human Immunoglobulin E Memory Via Hyper Immunoglobulin E Syndromes
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$96,009.00
Summary
Memory B cells generate rapid and potent antibody responses to known threats. The molecular basis for this is unknown, but defects increase the risk of infection, autoimmunity, and allergy. Autoimmunity and allergy are often mediated by a poorly understood antibody subclass, immunoglobulin E (IgE). My project will use emerging single-cell technologies to reveal the molecular mechanisms of antibody memory and IgE regulation, enabling the design of superior vaccines and immunomodulatory therapy.
Obesity In The Elderly: Effect Of Exercise And Weight Loss Therapies On Physiology And Function
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$69,729.00
Summary
The population is ageing and the prevalence of obesity is increasing. The “Baby Boomer” generation has the highest prevalence of obesity of all age groups, hence increasing numbers of older adults (age over 65) are obese, and this is unprecedented. We know that obesity predisposes to loss of physical function and independence in older adults, and may increase the risk of dementia. Our trial will compare multiple treatments for obesity in older persons, including newer treatments.
