This project aims to develop new curatorial models to enable Australian art galleries to respond effectively to changes in the medium of photography wrought by digital technologies. By conducting the first comprehensive analysis of nearly five decades of Australian photography curating and comparing it to curatorial approaches in related institutions locally and internationally, the project seeks to: identify the crucial role of photography exhibitions in the shaping of Australian visual culture; and develop opportunities for curators to better engage with the current proliferation of images, including new forms and practices of photography enabled by the Internet.Read moreRead less
In Public / In Focus: Photography, Testimony and the Public Sphere. Photography plays an important but little understood role in the public sphere. Photography plays an important but little understood role in the public sphere. Photographs invite viewers to identify with stories, events and others, and the ease with which photographs circulate in print and online makes them ideal for fostering discourse and debate. However, the increasing focus on testimony and witness in contemporary culture has recently altered the way that photography operates in public and raised some significant problems for photography historians regarding the representation of events, others and the past. This project will respond to these problems, and produce a new understanding of the historical, social, cultural and political links between photography and the public sphere today.Read moreRead less

The Project aims to transform the traditional artistic paradigm of visualisation as the human-centred depiction of predictable events by harnessing revolutionary advances in art and technology. Through application of an advanced artistic framework, this Laureate project expects to demonstrate how globally distributed users and digital systems can collaboratively depict unpredictable scenarios such as wildfire landscapes in real time and at real scale. Anticipated outcomes include a cutting-edge platform that provides life-like experiences to understand their spatial dynamics and the increasing uncertainties they pose, for dissemination through creative industry applications to optimise engagement and impact.Read moreRead less
Redefining museum experience as an immersive networked narrative. The Project aims to investigate the contemporary emergence of novel forms of immersive and networked narrative in museum settings. It expects to reformulate our understanding and experience of a multi-located collection and the ways in which it can be aesthetically explored. To do so, it will experimentally apply an artistic system that transforms the display, engagement and organisation of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences' ....Redefining museum experience as an immersive networked narrative. The Project aims to investigate the contemporary emergence of novel forms of immersive and networked narrative in museum settings. It expects to reformulate our understanding and experience of a multi-located collection and the ways in which it can be aesthetically explored. To do so, it will experimentally apply an artistic system that transforms the display, engagement and organisation of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences' collection across its venues. Anticipated is a demonstration of how users can explore this distributed collection in concert with a database system, with benefits that impact the aesthetic scope and scale of museum experiences.Read moreRead less
The Derwent project: immersive digital media visualisations for the representational problems of complex and remote environments. The Derwent Project will create new ways to visualise the complex natural and cultural history of Tasmania’s Derwent River system. This vast and often inaccessible environment includes Aboriginal and colonial heritage alongside ten hydroelectric developments. Its multiple layers of space and time present new opportunities to synthesise artistic and scientific paradigms of representation by drawing on geography, history, and archaeology. The outcome will be innovative forms of immersive time-based digital imaging that evocatively reveal hidden layers of environmental information to both specialist and general audiences.Read moreRead less
Life Cycle Measures of Cost Effectiveness for 4 D CAD in Design and Construct Projects across Industry Sectors. The effective and efficient delivery of complex construction projects will be transformed by the increased application of virtual design and construction technologies, including 4D CAD. By combining a 3D computer model of a design with the time dimension of the construction schedule, 4D CAD enables risks and opportunities to be better managed during the design phase and hence avoid costly issues during construction. However this requires addition design costs which currently represent a barrier to the uptake of this transforming technology. This project will overcome this by developing a flexible framework that allows the benefits gained across the life cycle of a project through using 4D CAD to be set against the additional costs and thus make this emerging technology more attractive to industry. Significantly this research will be based on comparative cases studies across different industry sectors including civil, building, and process engineering.Read moreRead less

An online collaborative design process is emerging in response to the global economy, increasing complexity of visual communication design projects and rapid developments in Internet technology. Research is required to identify and address the interdependence of various social, physical and technical factors that affect online design collaboration. The Omnium Project is an experiment that uses its unique framework to test online modes of interaction (physical) and collaboration (social) for visual communication designers. The outcome will produce an online technical-system and formalise a documented conceptual-approach for effective online collaborative design in visual communication.Read moreRead less
Innovative Solutions for Wool Garment Comfort through Design. This project will investigate how innovation in garment design can add value to the Australian wool clip and be a driver for new industrial development and product innovation. The project is relevant to stakeholders in rural communities as it will show the potential of new distributed technologies for resource-based industries and enable the wool industry to deliver increases in national wealth while minimising environmental impacts. ....Innovative Solutions for Wool Garment Comfort through Design. As the project will provide examples of design-led innovation for a traditional Australian product, the links made between wool and garment innovation will encourage a broader consumer understanding of Australian cultural identity. Ontology-based collaboration in design. The design process of a building project establishes function, form and performance for the final building. The design process of a building project establishes function, form and performance for the final building. When multiple participants from varying professions are involved there is a serious problem in coordinating, communicating, and locating information around each design decision. Establishing an ontology for this process, and using this ontology to structure all participant communication, will allow the requisite information from all participants to be considered for each design decision. This will greatly reduce rework and poor design decisions based on missed information. It will also ensure that participants are aware of all related information for their particular design tasks.Read moreRead less
A framework for adapting child interview protocols in complex cases. This project aims to develop–in collaboration with Aboriginal and other industry co-researchers–a ‘how to’ framework for effectively adapting standard child abuse interview protocols to accommodate the complexities that create barriers to disclosure. This project aims to develop–in collaboration with Aboriginal and other industry co-researchers–a ‘how to’ framework for effectively adapting standard child abuse interview protocols to accommodate the complexities that create barriers to disclosure. Complex cases necessitate interview adaption, but it requires systematic guidance and an interdisciplinary, practitioner-driven approach to be effective. This innovative framework is expected to have long-term benefits for services that support children’s well-being, through improvements in the quality of evidence underpinning decisions. By enhancing interviewer capability, there will also be fewer cases prematurely exiting the justice system before forensic interview or investigation.Read moreRead less
