This project aims to create the first history of survivor-activism that challenged and exposed failings in Australian child welfare systems. It intends to reveal how Care Leavers (people institutionalised as children—500,000+ Australians in the 20th century alone) advocated for government inquiries and reforms, and how stigma ascribed to them impacted their disparate experiences of citizenship. It will examine the contribution of faith-based activity, networking and thought to global governance and peace building institutionalised in the United Nations, universal human rights and humanitarianism that shaped the second half of the twentieth century. The project proposes a paradigm shift from traditional image building towards a full understanding and integration of consumer values into a deliberate process of co-created brand meanings. Brands thus managed can become iconic and symbolic of consumers' existing subcultures or may even define micro-cultures of consumption of their own (as in the case of Harley Davidson).

This project will examine stories relating to the migrant experience among former residents of hostels located in South Australia in the period 1949-85. The main aim is to develop a more complex narrative of the lived reality of migrants in this critical period of Australian contemporary history.
Reconciling with the Frontier: Accounting for Colonial Conflict. This project aims to widen public access to different kinds of historical knowledge about colonial frontier conflict, and thereby to contribute to contemporary processes of truth telling and reconciliation. It will use the innovative technology of Story Map digital software to open up new dialogue on how different communities interpret the past.
