Can we engineer plants to grow on salty soils? This project aims to answer questions about how plants can sustain their growth on salty soils. Plant-derived products constitute a pillar for our society. However, crop yields may be severely penalised due to unfavourable growth conditions, including soil salinity. This project aims to answer questions about how plants can sustain their growth on salty soils. Plant-derived products constitute a pillar for our society. However, crop yields may be severely penalised due to unfavourable growth conditions, including soil salinity. This is particularly relevant for Australia as a large fraction of its arable land is affected by salt. This project aims to use molecular and cell biology techniques to resolve mechanisms of how the synthesis of cellulose, which constitutes the bulk of a plant's biomass, is maintained in plants during salt stress. This project has potential for climate change mitigation, enhanced plant biomass production and improved fuel security.Read moreRead less
In depth characterisation of the gamma delta T cell immune synapse. This project aims to comprehensively characterise the activation principles of gamma delta T cells. These cells have an understudied but central role in vertebrate immunity and development. A missing piece of the puzzle is how gamma delta T cells sense stress and how this signal leads to activation. Expected outcomes include the generation of fundamental knowledge in immunology and structural biology. These cells have an understudied but central role in vertebrate immunity and development. A missing piece of the puzzle is how gamma delta T cells sense stress and how this signal leads to activation. Expected outcomes include the generation of fundamental knowledge in immunology and structural biology. This proposal uses high-skilled techniques, including cryo-electron microscopy and single-molecule imaging and holds ancillary benefits to postgraduate students. Anticipated outcomes include influential publications, building a critical mass of expertise in Australia and fostering international collaborations with Australia at the epicentre.Read moreRead less

Life is swirl in flatland: two dimensional turbulence in a superfluid. The project will create two-dimensional turbulence in a superfluid gas of atoms in order to observe the predicted, but counter-intuitive, growth of ordered structure out of chaotic motion. The observation of such behaviour would support its mechanism as the explanation for phenomena such as giant eddies in ocean currents and the Great Red Spot of Jupiter.
Generation and Application of Ultracold Molecules. This project will extend the techniques of laser trapping and cooling of neutral atoms to produce ensembles of ultracold molecules, specifically Rb2. The starting point will be a cold sample of atoms, followed by the photoassociative formation of ultracold molecules. The ultracold molecules will be collected in a far-detuned optical dipole trap, and subsequently probed using femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. This unique combination of femt ....Generation and Application of Ultracold Molecules. The ultracold molecules will be collected in a far-detuned optical dipole trap, and subsequently probed using femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. This unique combination of femtosecond spectroscopy with ultraslow molecules will extend the study of chemical processes to an entirely new temperature regime, leading to a new understanding of the quantum nature of chemical reactions.Read moreRead less
Mechanism design for next generation random access wireless protocols. Australia is well placed to take the lead in replacing carbon-intensive travel by teleconferencing, because of its isolation and geographic dispersion. Because these large distances introduce inevitable delays, it is important that the network itself add as little delay as possible for such real-time services. Our novel and practical resource allocation scheme will enable Australians (including Australian industries and rural communities) to receive better service at lower cost. This project will put Australia on the international stage as a leading contributor to wireless Internet technology. We will provide training for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in this important area.Read moreRead less

Semiparametric statistical methods allow researchers to only model those features of their data that are of interest, but still allow standard statistical inferences to be made about these features. The aim here is to develop non standard applications of semiparametric statistical methods in the estimation of genotype-phenotype relationships from family data and the estimation of animal abundance from capture-recapture data. The methods will be applied to real data and their theoretical properties developed. The practical significance of the project is the flexible new statistical methods that will become available to researchers. The theoretical significance will be the insights into semiparametric methods gained by developing these nonstandard applications. The expected outcomes are the new statistical procedures and the resulting theoretical insights into semiparametric statistics.Read moreRead less
