This project aims to study the briquetting processes of fine powders, and the preparation and utilization of new brown coal (lignite)–iron ore composite briquettes in a blast furnace. Lignite is a low-cost and abundant resource, and could be used in an emerging carbon-iron ore composite briquette for low-cost ironmaking. This project will perform multi-scale numerical studies, supported by lab/industry-scale experiments, to produce models and control strategies. Anticipated outcomes include better design and control of briquette's preparation and utilization in ironmaking for further cost-cutting; a new market for brown coal; and a more competitive Australian economy.Read moreRead less
Fundamental studies of multiphase flow and separation performance of natural medium cyclones for recovering waste coal. This project aims to develop an effective method to design, control and optimise natural medium cyclones for recovering waste coal, important for environmental protection and for energy efficiency. Its conduct will enhance Australia's leading position in the coal industry.
Three-dimensional flotation of fine particles. Three-dimensional flotation of fine particles. This project aims to research three-dimensional flotation of fine particles under both batch and continuous steady state conditions. In flotation, fine hydrophobic particles adhere to the two-dimensional surface of rising air bubbles, forming concentrate. In three-dimensional flotation, however, the particles adhere to and become embedded in a novel binder, forming a highly buoyant product. The process is very selective and arguably 1000 times faster than conventional flotation. The project is expected to provide the knowledge required to achieve scale-up, so the technology can be used to recover high value product from tailings waste, eliminating the capital impediment and possibly transforming the entire mining industry.Read moreRead less
Maximizing the kinetics of flotation processes. The purpose of this project is to develop a new flotation technology that can be operated at feed rates vastly higher than existing technologies. The technology will be applicable to low grade feeds often discarded to tailings, delivering billions of dollars in additional exports of Australian resources and contributing to the growth in the mining services sector.
A Framework for Understanding and Applying the Reflux Classifier in Fine Particle Beneficiation. The Reflux Classifier is a novel Australian technology that is re-defining what is possible in the field of gravity separation across the mining industry. This new research aims to focus on a critical gap in the knowledge, concerned with the powerful internal synergies that exist between the particle-fluid hydrodynamics of the lower fluidised bed and the upper system of inclined channels. The technology has already delivered nearly $1 billion in economic benefit, solving previously intractable problems. Through an experimental and theoretical study a new framework for understanding and applying this technology in fine particle beneficiation across an increasingly diverse range of applications is intended to be established.Read moreRead less
Multiscale study of raceway operations for low-cost and stable ironmaking. Fine particle beneficiation through agglomeration with a novel binder. New South Wales and Queensland have massive tailings dams, each with many millions of tonnes of valuable resource. These dams represent a significant liability. This project will develop a technology that can be used to recover the fine coal resource, in turn making the site rehabilitation an economic proposition.
Influence of athletic footwear on lower limb biomechanics of pubertal girls. This project aims to determine whether athletic footwear with appropriate design features can help improve neuromuscular control and, in doing so, reduce the potentially deleterious forces on the knee and lower limb structures of pubertal girls. As girls reach puberty, they become less able to control the movement patterns of their lower limbs, particularly in high-demand tasks like running and jumping. Better-designed ....Influence of athletic footwear on lower limb biomechanics of pubertal girls. Better-designed footwear for pubertal girls may improve movement patterns, decrease the likelihood of musculoskeletal injury and improve physical activity participation rates. Project outcomes may lead to the development of such footwear, and are also anticipated to expand our understanding of female developmental biomechanics.Read moreRead less
Optimising the spring in your step to enhance footwear design. This project aims to examine how the nervous system adjusts the mechanical function of our feet across a spectrum of speeds, from slow running through to maximal effort sprinting. The proposed research will explore how the nervous system controls the function of the foot to meet the ever-varying demands of locomotion in the real-world. This project aims to examine how the nervous system adjusts the mechanical function of our feet across a spectrum of speeds, from slow running through to maximal effort sprinting. The proposed research will explore how the nervous system controls the function of the foot to meet the ever-varying demands of locomotion in the real-world. Expected outcomes of this project are to determine if running shoes help or hinder the natural spring-like function of the foot. It will explain a conceptually novel design allowing shoes to support our feet, whilst harnessing the energetic benefits of the foot's spring-like function. This research has the potential to revolutionise athletic footwear design and has direct implications for enhanced performance in running athletes.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a novel athletic shoe that can reduce harmful knee loads during sport in adolescent girls and young women. As girls reach puberty, they become less able to control the movement patterns of their knees and lower limbs - particularly in high-demand tasks like jumping. The project will develop a new ASICS shoe that will be ‘field-tested’ during sporting activity with high ACL injury risk (netball) to evaluate its effect on tibial shock (in-field surrogate measure of knee load) and player comfort compared to a conventional shoe. Expected outcomes include reduced healthcare costs associated with the treatment of serious knee injury, including surgical reconstruction and early-onset knee osteoarthritis.Read moreRead less
