This work will assist in making Australia a safer and more secure country.
E.g., Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that for 2004, investigations of some 35% of murders, 63% of kidnappings, and 80% of robberies are incomplete at 30 days. Terrorism investigations are harder in that usually there is no initial crime trigger for an investigation. Any assistance our tools can provide in will be of significant benefit to Australia.Read moreRead less

This project aims to use computational intelligence techniques to reliably learn adaptive natural human pointing and gestures to control an interface on a pseudo-3D display. Highly complex data with interconnections between elements is hard to visualise on screens. Most current tools are operated using point/click/drag on 2D screens. The physical technology to capture appropriate human behaviours exists already, but not the adaptive learning of the syntax and semantics of individual gestures and actions, nor the multi-gesture information fusion required for understanding, which could significantly enhance efficiency, for example, in sorting through named entities in an investigation. All of this is done naturally by most human beings, using biological neural networks.Read moreRead less
Haemodynamic investigation of flow diverter stents for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. This project will explore the engineering of a flow diverter, an endovascular device for the treatment of brain aneurysms. The project will determine the optimal design of new types of flow diverters, which in turn could improve the effectiveness of treatments, thus reducing the associated costs of cerebral haemorrhage and stroke.
Creating new methods to study structure vision. The majority of the structure within natural images is due to third to fifth order correlations between image points. Research has shown that sensitivity to this higher order structure, provides so called Structure Vision. Research has also shown that as few as three to four brain mechanisms are involved, and these may be related to the Minkowski functionals, which in turn are related to the structural and surface properties of real materials. This project aims to build on recent discoveries of new stimuli to implement objective tests with which to study structure vision with the Partner Organisation. The project aims to also expand on realistic models of how Structure Vision may be computed by just a few coupled cortical pyramidal cells.Read moreRead less

Without the capability to identify and study the vast majority of extant viruses using traditional laboratory techniques, emerging threats to Australian livestock health cannot be efficiently diagnosed or treated. New approaches based on high-throughput sequencing have recently been developed to study such viruses, but making sense of the sequence data is still a complex problem. Together with the project's Partner Organisations, including YourGene Biosciences Australia and the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory, this project aims to develop new computational methods to broaden the scope of detection and analysis of unknown viruses, enhancing the capability for research into the causative viral agents of animal diseases.Read moreRead less
Unlocking the potential of quantitative x-ray micro-tomography. This project aims to build on two new ideas in data acquisition and 3D image reconstruction to bring 3D X-ray microscopy or computed tomography (CT) into advanced research use as well as common industrial applications. In the past 10 years, CT has improved our understanding in areas ranging from the evolution of life and osteoporosis to composite material failure and oil recovery. However, the full potential of CT remains unrealised because crucial features in structure and composition are overlooked by simplistic algorithms. Users cannot directly capture quantities of interest such as key compositional variation or defects, and workflows are poorly adapted for large-scale use in industrial fabrication or phenomics. This project aims to address these shortcomings using advanced mathematics and algorithms.Read moreRead less

This project aims to characterise driver awareness, activity and interactions with other vehicle occupants using visual and audio cues from internally mounted sensors. Road accidents cost Australia an estimated $30 billion per year and tragic loss of thousands of lives, yet the vast majority of severe vehicle crashes are linked to driver fatigue or distraction. The expected project outcomes include advanced artificial intelligence to infer and predict dangerous driver and passenger behaviour. This has the potential to significantly benefit society by advancing autonomous driving capabilities and reducing driver-induced accidents and fatalities, ensuring that every driver, passenger and pedestrian arrives home safely at the end of each day.Read moreRead less
Mathematics and computing for integrated stockyard-centric management of mining supply chains. Blended mineral products, such as coal and iron ore, make a strong contribution to Australia's economy. Blending occurs in stockpiles, so to realise product value, stockyard and supply chain operational plans must align with blend targets. This project will provide new mathematical and computational planning tools to maximise this value.
