Summary
Diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease cause enormous socio-economic harm to Australia. They are a major cause of disability and the burden associated with mental illness is predicted to grow by almost 50% over the coming decade. Therefore there is an urgent need to develop new approaches to identify and treat these diseases. This Fellowship will be dedicated to creating new diagnostic methods and treatments for these diseases
Stroke affects 1 in 6 Australians and often leads to lifelong disability. This Fellowship will support A/Prof Bernhardt to: 1) complete the world first, international clinical trial of very early rehabilitation for people with stroke (AVERT), which has the potential to reduce the global disability burden of this disease; 2) in a new acute exercise laboratory, complete studies that help refine existing early exercise interventions and 3) test new models of rehabilitation care that take advantage ....Stroke affects 1 in 6 Australians and often leads to lifelong disability. I am a reproductive biologist focused on women’s reproductive health. I am studying the reasons why some women are infertile have spontaneous abortions and pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia. My research will define the roles of molecules that are critical in the establishment of pregnancy and the formation of a health placenta and therefore a healthy baby.

Summary
Before an oocyte is fertilised, it contains all the material needed to form an embryo, and a legacy of information about its environment. My research aims to discover how oocyte signals, accumulated before conception, determine the health of the future individual; and then harness this knowledge to improve female reproductive health and generate new approaches to treat infertility and to optimise healthy embryo development in all pregnancies.

Summary
My work focuses on the endometrium, the lining of the uterus, into which the embryo implants to establish pregnancy. When the endometrium does not function correctly, the woman is usually infertile. Other disorders of the endometrium include endometriosis, menstrual bleeding problems and cancer. My studies have defined the molecular basis for much endometrial dysfunction. I am now developing non-invasive tests for these problems and rationales for new treatments.
