Autologous Constructs For Muscle Engineering And Repair

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $808,012.00
    Summary
This project will deliver new ways by which to make muscle for people who have had muscle loss through accidental trauma or muscle disease.

A Simple Method To Improve Stem Cell Transplant Therapy

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $831,652.00
    Summary
Despite the success of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and years of promise, almost all other stem cell therapies are considered experimental and remain in preclinical or early-phase clinical testing. This study aims to improve the efficiency of stem cell transplantation by manipulating cellular metabolism prior to transplantation, if effective these results may offer hope to patients suffering from a broad range of disorders.

A Novel Treatment For Ischemic Stroke: Preclinical Assessment In The Nonhuman Primate

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $762,246.00
    Summary
A major source of repair inhibition after brain injury is debris from dying cells, which contains proteins that hinder repair. This project will examine the expression of these proteins in a clinically-relevant model of ischemic stroke and determine if blocking the effect of these proteins neutralises their repair-inhibiting properties. If successful, there is likelihood that this drug, and method of delivery, could be translated into the human for treatment following an ischemic stroke.

Next Generation Cybernetics: Long Term Carbon Fibre Dual Stimulation / Recording Electrode Arrays For Closed Loop Neural Implants

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $679,670.00
    Summary
Electrodes implanted in the brain have enormous potential for treating a range of conditions from epilepsy to control of prosthetics for patients with limb loss. Currently, the electrodes used in such system fail rapidly because they are rejected by the body. We aim to use diamond with ultra-fine carbon fibre electrodes to make arrays that are invisible to the human immune system. Such arrays will function for the lifetime of the patient without needing replacement.

Effects Of Replacement And Withdrawal Of Testosterone In Human Males On Muscle, Bone And Fat

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $156,682.00
    Summary
Male sex hormone or androgen deficiency (AD) is a common, but under-diagnosed condition. AD decreases well being and contributes to muscle weakness, bone fragility and weight gain. Cutting edge technology will be used to help explain how AD may relate to these negative effects, particularly on muscle function. Given the importance of aging, frailty, osteoporosis and obesity, understanding the role of hormones in these conditions may have major implications for prevention and treatment.

The Role Of Stem-progenitor Cells In Regeneration Of Mouse Endometrium.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $311,938.00
    Summary
The endometrium (lining of the uterus) undergoes breakdown and re-growth each month as part of the menstrual cycle. This restorative process is not well understood. For the first time stem cells have been identified within human endometrium that are likely to be responsible for its remarkable regeneration. The aim of this project is to identify stem cells within the mouse endometrium, to use as a model to understand how the endometrium restores each month after menstruation.

Wnt Signaling In Dopaminergic Neuronal Connectivity

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $387,489.00
    Summary
During development, the brain establishes intricate and precise connections. In several brain pathways, little is known about the processes regulating this connectivity. Furthermore, it is likely that the same processes will be required to repair the injured- diseased brain. This project builds on our preliminary data, that Wnt proteins are important regulators of developing dopamine pathways, and has implications for dopamine disorders including Parkinson’s disease and addiction.

Promoting Regrowth Of Nerve Fibres Into The Epidermis During Diabetic Neuropathy By LRP Agonists

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $427,102.00
    Summary
Nerve damage can develop post injury or disease and is often very debilitating, slow to heal and can cause increased pain. Our work aims to examine a new class of molecules that we show can activate selected fat-receptors on nerve cells to guide the growth of regenerating nerves. We will determine how these receptors function with the aim of developing a novel class of therapeutics directed at healing nerve damage.

Selective Isolation And In Vivo Properties Of Dopamine Neurons Generated From Embryonic Stem Cells.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $505,389.00
    Summary
This research aims to develop a procedure that allows for the safe and effective use of stem cells as a therapy for Parkinson’s disease. It is based on the concept that new dopamine neurons, generated from stem cells, can be implanted into the brain of the patients in order to replace those lost to the disease, thereby improving motor function.

Knowledge, Identification And Exploitation Of Dopaminergic Axon Guidance Cues Will Improve Cell Replacement Therapy For ParkinsonÍs Disease.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $481,797.00
    Summary
Many obstacles exist for cell transplantation in ParkinsonÍs Disease; namely poor graft survival, restoration of appropriate circuitry and adequate nerve fiber growth from new cells. Using knowledge of how neural circuits are established during fetal development, we will attempt to recapitulate these events following transplantation. Further, we will identify new and novel cues in regulating the connectivity and growth of these nerve fibers.
