Summary
All the information to form an adult is contained in the DNA of the fertilized egg. Development is achieved by turning genes on and off, controlled by proteins called epigenetic modifiers. Sometimes this fails, leading to disease. Despite their vital role, we have data on just 20% of the potential epigenetic modifiers in humans. I will use novel screen-based technology to find hundreds more, to enable us and others to characterise the role of epigenetics in normal development and disease.

Summary
Muscles are damaged all of the time, as we stretch and contract them, but we don't fully understand how they repair themselves. We are studying the molecular steps taken by a muscle cell to repair membrane damage. Our research will provide valuable insights into how to treat muscular dystrophy and other conditions characterised by membrane damage to cells, such as heart attack and stroke.

Members of the transforming growth factor ? (TGF-?) family of proteins play crucial roles in adult tissue homeostasis. In recent years a new paradigm has emerged suggesting that inhibition of TGF-? signalling could be an effective strategy for restoring homeostasis in disease-affected tissues. Dr Harrison’s overall research strategy is based on this concept, and is particularly focussed on developing specific antagonists of individual TGF-? proteins.

I will undertake research in a number of areas, with a focuses on: i)Imported infections: My lead role in and access to a global network of sites that track infections among travellers and immigrants will enable study of emerging priority issues among mobile populations. ii)Waterborne risks: I will perform studies to identify optimal strategies for improving water supply and associated health impacts in developing countries.

Viruses cause many diseases today and new viruses emerge to post threats to future health and well being. The proposed work investigates how viruses cause disease in people, particularly how viral infections can lead to arthritis or muscle pain. This understanding will be used in the development of new prevention strategies and treatments.
