This project will develop the basis for a simple design to improve the energy efficiency of natural convection heat exchangers. Heat exchangers are widely adopted in many electronic devices and industrial processes as they require no external power input, additional space, and are quiet, reliable and economical. The research will exploit the interaction between two flows to trigger turbulence, and will result in an increase of the overall capacity and performance of engineering systems. This will contribute significantly to reductions in power consumption and improvements in productivity and work environment, leading ultimately to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and to economic benefits.Read moreRead less

Inland discharges into reservoirs often carry rich nutrients, pollutants and biological species into the coastal regions, which are redistributed across the central regions of reservoirs through dynamical mixing processes. One of the important mixing processes is the horizontal exchange flow between the near shore and central regions induced by diurnal heating and cooling through the water surface, which is classified as a natural convection process. This process will be investigated in this project through a closely linked analytical, experimental and numerical research program. The output from this research will have direct application in water quality management and environmental planning.Read moreRead less

Soil acidity, resulting in Al toxicity, affects production on circa 50% of Australia's intensively used agricultural land, resulting in 8.5 times more foregone agricultural income than dryland salinity (National Land and Water Resources Audit, 2001). Often, remediation with lime is not possible or affordable. By understanding Al reactions with cell wall components, we aim to identify root parameters related to Al resistance by plants. These parameters will be useful as selection markers to identify and breed Al-tolerant crop genotypes. This, in turn, will improve yields and farm profitability, allowing farmers to use lime to prevent further acidification. This increases sustainability of cropping operations on the 50 Mha with acid soils.Read moreRead less

Recent work has discovered that certain radical anions have electronic configurations that defy chemical convention and exhibit exceptional radical stability. Exploitation of this breakthrough first requires experimental elucidation of the intrinsic electronic structure of these compounds and how it relates to their remarkable properties. This project will probe the fundamental structure and energetics of radical anions by modifying instrumentation to enable multi-step gas-phase ion synthesis to be efficiently coupled with anion photoelectron spectroscopy. These investigations are essential to revealing the scope of this phenomenon in free radical chemistry and biology and could inform future development of new catalysts for polymerisation.Read moreRead less
