Preventing Suicide: A psychological autopsy study of the last contact with a health professional before suicide. In Australia, 48% of all suicides in 2000 were by 35-64 year olds; an additional 13% were by 65 years and over. This study will examine the last clinical contact older suicide victims had with health professionals in order to determine whether this contact offers an opportunity for intervention. This study will examine the last clinical contact older suicide victims had with health professionals in order to determine whether this contact offers an opportunity for intervention. For the first time in Australia, GP's, health professionals, and the deceased's next-of-kin will be interviewed to determine the context surrounding the deceased's death, and the abilities of health professionals to identify warning signs and to intervene prior to suicide. Given our ageing population, the outcomes will be significant in educating all health professionals to identify suicidal signs, and to prevent premature death in the elderly.Read moreRead less

We assume that some individuals, because of the role they have (e.g., parents), are significant others. Moreover, we assume that significant others influence our emotions, motivation, and behaviour. These assumptions have not been systematically tested using a self-regulatory framework. Also no coherent model, detailing how and why individuals come to be significant and the mechanisms by which they have an influence, has been proposed. We present a theoretical model to be tested in a sequence of 10 studies. The results will provide understanding of the role of significant others that will have applications in clinical settings and in organisational contexts.Read moreRead less

This research project will investigate interventions based on proven elements of theories on the adoption and maintenance of increased physical activity and psychological well-being in sedentary women aged 25-45 years, who are at risk of remaining inactive. A longitudinal study will examine the efficacy of adoption and maintenance interventions that combine effective constructs identified in analysis of theories. Effective intervention will promote current life-experience, healthy lifestyle in later life, and decrease risk of chronic ill health.Read moreRead less

This study is designed to determine the financial impact of chronic progressive neurological illnesses on people with these disorders and their families. Due to the nature of these illnesses and the time of onset, financial strain is a major concern for people with these disorders. This research is central to the improvement of services to address the changes in financial situation associated with these disorders and its impact. The results will lead to an understanding of factors related to financial strain, and the development of services to address the well-being of this population.Read moreRead less
A new conceptualization of forgiveness: Altruistic and self-interested foci as predictors of psychological costs and benefits of forgiveness. The project makes a pioneering theoretical contribution by recognising that forgiveness possesses both altruistic and self-interested dimensions. The project makes a pioneering theoretical contribution by recognising that forgiveness possesses both altruistic and self-interested dimensions. This reconceptualisation will result in three main community benefits: [1] researchers and practitioners will be better able to predict when forgiveness is most beneficial and when it is psychologically costly; [2] forgiveness strategies and principles will be more appropriately and strategically applied across different social contexts; and [3] public understanding of what it really means to forgive will be enhanced, thereby increasing the extent to which forgiveness may be embraced in the population.Read moreRead less
An evaluation of concerns, self-perceived needs, and supportive interventions, for informal cancer carers: A comparative study of female and male carers. Informal cancer carers experience high levels of anxiety, depression, and unmet support needs, with women carers at higher risk than men. However, little is known about the factors underlying this gender difference, and existing support services have not specifically targeted the needs of female and male cancer carers. Informal cancer carers experience high levels of anxiety, depression, and unmet support needs, with women carers at higher risk than men. However, little is known about the factors underlying this gender difference, and existing support services have not specifically targeted the needs of female and male cancer carers. This study will explore the concerns, self-perceived needs, and psychological wellbeing of informal cancer carers living in New South Wales, comparing the experiences of female and male carers, at different stages of the care-giving journey. Based on these findings, a program of targeted supportive interventions will be developed, and then systematically evaluated within a controlled trial.Read moreRead less
The structure and content of self-knowledge: When and how are implicit and explicit measures related and what do they tell us? Research has found clear links between individuals' beliefs about themselves and emotion, motivation, and behaviour. These beliefs also play a role in the development of and recovery from psychological illness. However, understanding has been limited by the use of explicit measures, which rely on our ability to 'know' everything about ourselves, and our willingness to disclose. We investigate how explicitly and implicitly measured self-knowledge affect emotion, motivation, and behaviour. As a result, we redress a major criticism of this research, and facilitate a greater understanding of the role of self-knowledge, including aspects that we are not able to articulate, in psychological well-being.Read moreRead less
