This eases the burden on the public health system. Early intervention reduces hospitalisations and the psychiatric medications prescribed resulting in decreased MBS and PBS spending. Intervention for mental health decreases transitions into unemployment, sickness or disability benefit reducing the societal burden of mental health. Maintaining individuals in employment also increases tax revenue. Increase in employee's productivity serves to increase gross domestic product. The employees, their families, and community's quality of life will improve.Read moreRead less

The socioeconomic determinants and dynamics of mental health and disorders in Australia and the United Kingdom: evidence from childhood to the elderly years. Poor mental health and specific mental disorders are prevalent in Australia, and have severe consequences for the social and economic functioning of individuals, families and communities. This project will shed new light on the long-term socio-economic determinants and dynamics of mental health, using data that tracks individuals over time.
The impact of crime on the mental wellbeing of communities. Considering not only the direct impact of crime on the victims but also the indirect consequences of living in a community with a higher crime rate may in fact lead to a more accurate analysis of the size of the consequences of criminal activities on the society. Further, it may also be the case that the negative externality of crime on non-victims is much larger for some crimes than for others. Further, it may also be the case that the negative externality of crime on non-victims is much larger for some crimes than for others. If this were the case, it could have implications for the way in which police resources are presently distributed across different crimes. Better understanding the total societal cost of crime - to both victims and non-victims - could therefore help improve public policy. Read moreRead less
An Economic Analysis of the Effect of Networks on Jobs and Mental Health in China: Patterns, Consequences and Policy Implications. China is a priority neighbour whose growth and stability will have a large impact on Australia. Urbanisation and economic reforms change the incentives to maintain and form social relations. Researching these changes to help policy makers keep the effects within acceptable borders is a top priority of the Chinese government and entirely in Australia's own interest. Researching these changes to help policy makers keep the effects within acceptable borders is a top priority of the Chinese government and entirely in Australia's own interest. The project thus serves as a bridge between policymakers and researchers: it is done in consultation with AusAID, the Chinese ministry for labour, and international scientific organisations such as the Ford Foundation and the German Institute of Labour (IZA)Read moreRead less

This project will provide new evidence on the determinants and dynamics of mental health and wellbeing using a range of survey data that tracks individuals for up to 50 years, as well as real-time information from internet search data. Mental health problems often start early in life and reoccur throughout adulthood, which makes a better understanding of the relationship between childhood socioeconomic conditions and mental health outcomes throughout the life-course important for designing policies aimed at early prevention, and therefore reducing socioeconomic inequalities.Read moreRead less

Economists have joined psychologists, health professionals and other social scientists to address the question of how society can be made happier. The literature to date has largely focused on how individuals can attain happiness by addressing personal psychological and health issues. This project offers a different perspective by asking the question: What can be done to make others happy? In particular, this project focuses on: the effect we have on the happiness of our partners and children; how we optimally handle information as individuals and as a society, to make other people happy; how we can make our neighbourhoods happy; and how we can make other countries happy.Read moreRead less

Older drivers are the fastest growing segment of the driving population, which has implications for road safety. The removal of cataract is a common surgical procedure for older drivers, therefore, it is necessary to determine the effects of cataract surgery on crash risk. This project will be the largest population based study to examine crash risk for older drivers with cataract and the cost-effectiveness in terms of a reduction in crashes. The development of effective countermeasures will have direct relevance for road safety, medical practitioners and licensing authorities in Australia and is also pivotal to reducing the financial burden associated with older driver crashes.

Pharmaceuticals are a central feature in maintaining the health of Australians and with factors such as an ageing population and technological advances the centrality of pharmaceuticals is likely to be consolidated One, if not the, major challenge will be how to provide pharmaceuticals efficiently, equitably and sustainably. If significant and extensive, moral hazard potentially compromises PBS efficiency and threatens sustainability. The proposed project represents a significant empirical contribution to understanding the impact of moral hazard on the PBS and will make a significant contribution towards making the PBS sustainableRead moreRead less
