An experimental writing technique that involves writing about one's personal stressful experiences by using emotive descriptive words has been found to be helpful in improving mental health and physical functioning in various populations. This study will test how this expressive writing task leads to health benefits in two distinct samples; cancer survivors and healthy individuals. By identifying the methods by which this writing task can improve health functioning, this project will assist in adapting this task for use as a therapeutic technique in clinical settings to enhance the well-being of Australians. This will place less demands on health services, reduce absenteeism, and improve productivity. Read moreRead less
A longitudinal examination of the contribution of specific risk factors to the development of anxiety disorders during adolescence. The aims of this project are to follow a group of adolescent girls from around 12 to 16 years of age to examine possible predictors for developing anxiety disorders. A large group of girls and their parents will complete questionnaires in the first year of high school and a smaller group will be assessed through interviews and direct observation. The aims of this project are to follow a group of adolescent girls from around 12 to 16 years of age to examine possible predictors for developing anxiety disorders. A large group of girls and their parents will complete questionnaires in the first year of high school and a smaller group will be assessed through interviews and direct observation. The girls will be reassessed at yearly intervals over three years. The project will tell us a great deal about factors that are important in the development of anxiety. This will help to plan prevention programs in the future.Read moreRead less

People with intellectual disability (ID) are three times more likely to suffer mental illness than the general community, making this a bigger problem than schizophrenia. They are a great burden to their carers and cost to the community but their mental health problems remain largely untreated. This study aims to conduct the largest and most comprehensive survey of the mental health of adults with ID that has been undertaken internationally to date. The population will cover the age span of late adolescence (16 years) through the transition to adult life then through to the elderly. The research will establish the prevalence and nature of mental illness and potential risk factors in a large representative population of adults with ID.Read moreRead less

The long-term costs of childhood obesity, bullying and poor mental health are staggering. Despite the investment of billions of dollars for prevention and intervention, the statistics continue to worsen. We offer a simple, sustainable, cost-effective programme of prevention aimed at important national priorities within health and research. We expect to demonstrate a significant effect on children's activity levels, coping and social skills through strategies that are replicable in every school playground in the nation and to contribute to policy regarding play, health, and education.Read moreRead less
A randomised controlled trial assessing the effects of a school-based sleep intervention in Year 6 and 7 students. Inadequate sleep is associated with a wide range of health problems in children, including obesity and poor performance at school. Children are sleeping less than ever before, and there is an increasing pattern of “yo yo sleeping” (sleep deprivation on school days followed by catch up sleeps on weekends). This study will trial a school-based program designed to improve the sleeping ....A randomised controlled trial assessing the effects of a school-based sleep intervention in Year 6 and 7 students. Children are sleeping less than ever before, and there is an increasing pattern of “yo yo sleeping” (sleep deprivation on school days followed by catch up sleeps on weekends). This study will trial a school-based program designed to improve the sleeping habits of children. Better sleep is expected to result in improved alertness, better life satisfaction, and improved weight status.Read moreRead less

Understanding the potential and actual impact of mass adversity on individual and societal resilience and conceptualisation of the future will help improve the preparedness, response, and recovery by emergency workers, individuals, and society to these events. Guiding likely individual and social behaviours at an appropriate time will help to avoid or mitigate negative social, economic, and health impacts. Studying Bali survivors will lead to an understanding of how their experiences and recoveries have impacted their behaviours and perception of the future, and will identify the most effective professional and community responses to future threat. This research project will investigate interventions based on proven elements of theories on the adoption and maintenance of increased physical activity and psychological well-being in sedentary women aged 25-45 years, who are at risk of remaining inactive. A longitudinal study will examine the efficacy of adoption and maintenance interventions that combine effective constructs identified in analysis of theories. Effective intervention will promote current life-experience, healthy lifestyle in later life, and decrease risk of chronic ill health.Read moreRead less
Improving health and criminal justice outcomes among Australia's offender population using a multi-disciplinary, all of government approach. Offender populations comprise some of the most marginalised and socially excluded individuals in society. With this comes poor health, engagement in risk behaviours and reduced social outcomes. Violence, mental health, infectious diseases, and substance misuse are all characteristics of offender populations and have a huge impact on the wider community. The research programme linked to this application will collect new information aimed at reducing this impact and also develop a much needed intervention to reduce violent reoffending. Indigenous people are over-represented in the Australian prison system and will benefit from the work programme associated with this application.Read moreRead less

Depression is the most common mental health problem in young people in Australia. Early diagnosis can minimise the disturbance of typical functioning and development of social and academic skills. Current assessment techniques consume significant time in urgent clinical situations, where an immediate assessment of risk is required. An automatic diagnostic system will provide an important objective indicator giving an immediate quantitative assessment of the mental state of a patient. The quantitative measure given by the diagnostic system proposed will give physicians and therapists an improved metric by which they can gauge the effectiveness of various treatments in reducing depression and suicidality. Developing effective methods of assessing and treating stalkers will directly impact the health and safety of thousands of stalking victims across Australia, and reduce the number of stalkers coming into contact with the criminal justice system. Application of the assessment and treatment tools developed during this project by mental health and corrective services around Australia will help to reduce physical and psychological harm experienced by both stalkers and their victims. The development and implementation of practical and effective strategies that lessen the impact of stalking will reduce the burden of mental ill-health caused by stalking, increase community safety, and reduce overall levels of victimisation in Australian society.
