Adaptive structures are becoming increasingly important due to their direct improvement of structural system performance. However, electroelastic behaviour and damage mechanism, which are primary concerns for adaptive structural design, are poorly understood. This project aims at developing micro-electromechanics and finite element analysis models to investigate the electroelastic properties and detect delamination for adaptive structures. It combines the fields of micro-electromechanics and composite material analysis in a computational framework to provide a useful and cost-effective tool for modelling the response of adaptive structures. It is a challenging task and will have significant impact in the adaptive structure design community.Read moreRead less

Recent results from an international collaboration between the Chief Investigator and researchers from the Japanese materials industry have shown that rapid heating can enhance the coercivity of chromium-added iron-neodymium-boron-based nanocomposite magnets by 30 times. The aim of this project is to clarify the mechanism of this giant magnetic hardening effect and thereby establish a basis for further development of economically viable nanocomposite magnets with low neodymium content. Our novel flash-annealing process will allow exploration of new nanocomposite alloys, which may lead to Australian-owned patents.Read moreRead less

The aim of the project is the growth of carbon thin films with a robust diamond-like structure for high performance electronic applications via the development of a new growth technique: Electric Field Induced Coupling (EFIC), which is based on liquid-phase layer-by-layer heteroepitaxial growth. The EFIC technique employing unique polarization-induced growth will significantly enhance technological output compared to existing technologies by overcoming current difficulties with expensive and complicated production methods. Ambient temperatures and pressures employed by the technique will enable us to form diamond-based semiconductors at low cost with sufficient speed and the properties required for industrial production.

Establishing a state-of-the-science 3-D optical surface profiler will enable macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscopic profiling of surfaces over a very broad range of research programs including, laser cleaning and surface modification, laser precision microfabrication, surface, materials and device characterisation and optical physics applications. The importance and significance of these projects has already been established by the projects having competitive funding. The instrument will undoubtedly support many additional research programs. It is similar to an Atomic-Force-Microscope or stylus profilometer but has significant additional capabilites. These include profiling much larger areas at sub-nanometre resolution and the non-contact nature of the technique. These features will enable surface characterisation that can not be achieved by other means.Read moreRead less
