This project aims to investigate and make new discoveries on the unique properties of liquid metals. Liquid metals have traditionally been used in mining, for switches, barometers, heat transfer units, and coolers and heaters. However, recent discoveries have indicated that liquid metals have untapped potential in applications for creating systems with extraordinary physical and chemical properties. This project will expand our knowledge of liquid metals by exploring liquid metals as electron rich solvents and investigating new properties to develop future applications in electronics, optics, catalysts, thermal devices and bio systems.Read moreRead less
Atomic scale information for the design of nanomaterials. This project aims to develop a new tool to measure the 3-D distribution of atoms within nanoparticles. For the rational design of nanoparticles, it is necessary to compare the atomic scale structure to the resulting performance. But this information is hard to access. This projects aims to develop new methods so that atom probe microscopy can be applied to experimentally measure the precise 3-D location and identity of the individual atom ....Atomic scale information for the design of nanomaterials. This project aims to develop a new tool to measure the 3-D distribution of atoms within nanoparticles. For the rational design of nanoparticles, it is necessary to compare the atomic scale structure to the resulting performance. But this information is hard to access. This projects aims to develop new methods so that atom probe microscopy can be applied to experimentally measure the precise 3-D location and identity of the individual atoms within nanoparticles, and apply them in the development of alloy catalyst nanoparticles that could make the sustainable production of liquid fuels from biomass commercially viable. These new tools would be useful across the wide range of engineering applications for which nanomaterials are currently being developed.Read moreRead less
Novel energy-efficient electrowinning anodes. Developed nations rely extensively on metallic materials to sustain modern society. This places a significant importance on delivery of base metals, and that delivery must be as efficient and clean as possible. The first step in the delivery chain is extraction from the ore, and much of this technology is based on electrowinning (EW), where the behaviour of the anode is critical to overall process efficiency. This project will deliver advances in EW anodes which will lead to energy savings, which in turn, will result in a cleaner overall production cycle, major emission reductions and cost savings. The expected outcomes of this project are targeted at the development of new and advanced anode materials.Read moreRead less
Strain Matching Enabled Composite Design for Exceptional Mechanical Prowess. This project intends to develop phase-transforming matrix-nanolamellar composites of exceptional mechanical properties. Nanowires embedded in phase-transforming matrix composites achieve ultra-large elastic strains (around 6 per cent), thus ultra-high strengths. This project aims to build on this discovery and transcend the limitations of the nanowire composites by creating lattice-strain-matching enabled nanolamellar composites via innovative materials processing. The expected outcomes may lead to the design and creation of metallic composites of exceptional mechanical prowess and the development of close-to-application technology for fabrication of the composite materials.Read moreRead less

Novel anodic coating of magnesium alloy components for corrosion protection. This research aims to protect magnesium alloys from corrosion, paving a path for them to be used as auto and aircraft components. It will establish novel protective anodic coatings upon magnesium and thereby pioneer implementation of magnesium alloys more generally, as galvanising did for steels.
