Discrete choice experiments and models are used to forecast consumer responses to changes in products policies and programs worldwide. Recent research suggests key model assumptions are violated because error variances covary with observed and unobserved factors. In order to address this, we will model systematic relationships between error variances and observed (eg, prices, survey length) and unobserved (eg, 'convenience', 'reputation') factors to improve model reliability and accuracy. This should lead to more accurate models/forecasts, benefitting business and government, which addresses the national priority of 'frontier technologies, promoting an innovative culture and economy'.Read moreRead less

It is imperative that Australia finds out why and how its firms perform after they have been taken over or merged with a foreign firm. Especially if the Australian firm is export active, because if the Australian firm starts to perform poorly after it has been merged/acquired by the foreign firm this could have a negative impact on Australia's Balance of Payments/Balance of Trade thereby making a study of this type most timely.Read moreRead less
Modelling the Choices of Individuals. Individuals make decisions daily and some of these decisions have wide-reaching and long-term consequences, such as choices among housing, public transport, electoral candidates and health care options. Individuals make decisions daily and some of these decisions have wide-reaching and long-term consequences, such as choices among housing, public transport, electoral candidates and health care options. The principal aim of this project is to develop reliable and valid ways to model individual level choice processes. Once completed, this will provide insights into ways to aggregate sampled observations when population-level applications are required, and allow us to compare and test several competing theories of choice behaviour. This will enable us to make contributions to understanding and modelling human decision making in many fields ranging from marketing to medicine.Read moreRead less
Understanding cross-cultural consumer behaviour and implications for effective segmentation, targeting and positioning of Western Australia as a tourism destination. This research extends a model of cross-cultural consumer behaviour suggested by the first CI (Lee, 2000) that provides richer specification of the antecedents of people's actions than previously suggested models. The model will be compared with these models, which have been successful in Western, but less successful in Eastern, cult ....Understanding cross-cultural consumer behaviour and implications for effective segmentation, targeting and positioning of Western Australia as a tourism destination. This research extends a model of cross-cultural consumer behaviour suggested by the first CI (Lee, 2000) that provides richer specification of the antecedents of people's actions than previously suggested models. The model will be compared with these models, which have been successful in Western, but less successful in Eastern, cultures. The model will be tested in the tourism domain to predict intentions and behaviour of potential visitors. Results will be used to improve the effectiveness of Western Australia's tourism marketing. In addition, a method to reduce social desirability bias will be tested, as will two scales measuring aspects of culture. Read moreRead less
Response style heterogeneity in empirical marketing research. This study aims to improve the validity of empirical studies by accounting for different ways in which respondents answer questionnaires (response styles) while analysing the data. Response styles have been shown to depend on the cultural background of respondents. This work therefore is of particular importance in Australia given the large number of cultural backgrounds residents come from. The proposed method will be empirically tested in the context of surveys investigating sustainable tourism, public acceptance of alternative water sources and volunteering, three areas which are central to maintaining Australia's environmental sustainability and providing social and environmental services which are not covered by the commercial sector.Read moreRead less

Practitioners will be informed of feasible paths for early and rapid internationalisation. Yet-to-internationalise small and medium enterprises will be advised on how to acquire, reconfigure and use capabilities to achieve positional advantages in international markets. The Australian and international academic community will be better informed of born global internationalisation, enriching teaching and learning practices in entrepreneurship, international business, international marketing, strategic management and small business management.

This network brings together a multi-disciplinary research group to enhance frontier science in managerial/consumer decision making and choice behaviour. Our focus will on using our interaction to develop normative and descriptive theory by operationalising theories and methods from a mixture of disciplines. Individual/group decisions/choices underlie many aggregate societal phenomena like election outcomes, consumer demand, technology adoption, etc. Better understanding of such processes will lead to better models, better forecasts and better decision outcomes for Australia, and smarter use of information and data; something that can only come from a multi-disciplinary interaction of theory and method.Read moreRead less

Freight transport is a major contributor to traffic congestion and environmental blight in urban areas and adds sizeable costs to final consumption and the terms of trade, yet we currently lack any policy-rich predictive demand models. This program fills this gap. Using ideas from supply chain alliance, stated choice methods and behavioural models we develop a research program to understand and predict the environmental and traffic impacts of the freight distribution task for key commodity classes in respect of origin, destination, trip timing, routing, selection of vehicle type and the way that consolidation is undertaken in freight distribution.Read moreRead less
Modelling the Dynamics of Urban Passenger Travel Activity of Seniors in an Ageing Population. Seniors in an ageing population (SAPS) are a significant and growing segment of the population. As (relatively) cash rich and time poor, they have very high expectations in respect of levels of accessibility and mobility required from the transport system, as well as from other supporting networks. Seniors in an ageing population (SAPS) are a significant and growing segment of the population. As (relatively) cash rich and time poor, they have very high expectations in respect of levels of accessibility and mobility required from the transport system, as well as from other supporting networks. We currently lack policy-rich travel demand models to assist in understanding the complex dynamics that influence the travel activities of SAPS. Using ideas from stated choice methods, interactive agency choice experiments, panel econometrics and behavioural discrete choice models we propose a research program designed to understand these demands. Special focus is given to support networks and the ways in which these impact on the demand for car and public transport use, as well as meeting the access needs to health-support and leisure facilities and to supporting networks of family and friends.Read moreRead less

Consumer behaviour theory suggests that most farmers should be highly motivated, discriminating purchasers of agricultural technology. This suggests that most farmers can be innovators and therefore, differences in farmers' adoption behaviour reflect real differences in farming contexts and experiences. This project will test a consumer behaviour model of innovation adoption in agriculture using horticulure as a case study. The project will assist agencies working in this area to develop a better understanding of the principles governing the adoption of agricultural innovations and provide more effective extension programs.Read moreRead less
