Australian coastal soils often pose significant challenges in the design and construction of railways. The project aims to develop a novel hybrid system of pipe piles & prefabricated vertical drains installed to prevent soft foundation soil (subgrade) from excessive yielding under prolonged cyclic loading by heavy-haul trains. Using large-scale physical model simulations and field trials supported by numerical analysis of soil-pile-drain interaction mechanisms, this innovative concept will be examined to establish a user-friendly design methodology. For rail operators, the outcomes will generate substantially reduced maintenance costs, while extending the longevity of track infrastructure to ensure faster and heavier trains of the future. This work aims to identify the factors responsible for the emerging problem of catastrophic failure of high-load cable bolts in underground mines and develop strategies for resisting their failure. The work is of high importance since failure of cable bolts is now being reported in several mines across Australia and is expected to become a problem world-wide. The work is novel as it intends to be the very first study of catastrophic cable bolt failure. The expected outcome is the development of economically viable solutions for avoiding catastrophic cable bolt failure. It is anticipated that the findings will also be relevant to the civil engineering sector.Read moreRead less
An investigation into the relationships between geology, geometry and wind blast magnitude & intensity in underground coal mining. In some underground coal mines where the roof comprises massive rock, the roof strata do not cave regularly as extraction progresses but hang up, leading to extensive areas of unsupported roof. These areas can suddenly collapse, compressing the air beneath and forcing it out of the void through surrounding openings giving rise to a potentially hazardous phenomenon known as wind blast. The aim is to develop a fundamental understanding of the phenomenon and thus provide a basis on which to develop strategies to mitigate the hazard. Outcomes are expected to be improved levels of mining safety, technical viability and economics.Read moreRead less
Fires, black carbon, greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon balance of southern sclerophyll forests. Ecologically sustainable forest management requires an understanding of the role of fire in the carbon balance of native forests, and in Australia's overall carbon balance. Fires are crucial to both this carbon balance and to the ecology of the forests. This project will help forest managers make decisions about using prescribed fire to manage fuels while at the same time managing carbon. An aim of management is to identify fire regimes that will optimise the carbon outcome as well as provide protection to life and property. This project will help managers meet that aim by developing a quantitative understanding of how much stable, black carbon (charcoal) is produced and how it affects other soil processes.Read moreRead less

This project uses plant traits to select existing and novel tree species for glasshouse studies to quantify the uptake of stormwater and polluting nutrients as well as drought tolerance in stormwater street tree systems. In collaboration with water industry and tree nursery industry partners and a syndicate of local councils, the project aims to install passive stormwater street tree systems into existing suburbs and new greenfield developments in Melbourne. Models will be used to design and predict the performance of these stormwater street tree systems, and the glasshouse/field research outputs are expected to refine the leading industry and government relevant urban catchment model.Read moreRead less
Privacy-preserving cloud data mining-as-a-service. This project aims to explore practical privacy-preserving solutions for cloud data mining-as-a-service based on the Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) technology. The research addresses privacy concerns of users when outsourcing data mining needs to the cloud. These concerns have increased as more businesses evaluate data mining-as-an outsourced service due to lack of expertise or computation resources. The expected outcomes from the research will include new data privacy models, new privacy-preserving data mining algorithms, and a prototype of cloud data mining software. These will help businesses cut costs for data mining and privacy protection, and provide significant benefits toward helping Australia achieve its national cyber security strategy and potentially provide economic impact from commercialisation of new software technology for the industry partner.Read moreRead less

It will apply this knowledge to develop a new class of high temperature- and pressure- resistant emulsion explosives. The resulting technology will be used in the safe and efficient mining of precious mineral deposits, such as gold, in geothermally active regions worldwide. The project will benefit the Australian mining industry by allowing mining of resources at deep levels, creating more jobs and increasing Australia's export earnings.Read moreRead less
Safe Emulsion Explosives for High Temperature Deep Level Mining. This project aims to develop a new class of emulsion explosives, which are not susceptible to hot and reactive rock conditions in very deep-level ore mines. These emulsions will contain a tuneable polymer network to prevent collapsing of the emulsion columns in hot upholes in high temperature mines, along with additives to eliminate the exothermic reaction with the rocks. If not prevented the reaction can cause premature detonation ....Safe Emulsion Explosives for High Temperature Deep Level Mining. If not prevented the reaction can cause premature detonation or deflagration of the emulsion causing fatal injuries and generation of toxic NOx gases. Increase in economically and safely extractable deep-level ore volume that generates greater export earnings and more jobs are expected project outcomes, as is reduced atmospheric pollution.Read moreRead less

In this project, we aim to build resilience into alpine National Parks and Alpine Resorts to counter the effects of ongoing declines in snow. Alpine environments depend on snow to regulate water flows, insulate vegetation, control soil erosion and promote proper ecosystem functioning. How these processes will operate in a snow-free future is unknown. We will determine how and where snow characteristics drive soil water availability for plants and which plant species have the best adaptation and regeneration potential under extreme conditions such as heat, frost and drought. Benefits of the project include innovative land management and rehabilitation solutions, to safeguard Australia's alpine areas under changing environmental conditions.Read moreRead less
