Online Learning (OL) is the process of predicting answers for a sequence of questions. OL has enjoyed much attention in recent years due to its natural ability of processing large scale non-structured data and adapting to a changing environment. However, OL has three weaknesses: it does not scale for structured data; it often assumes that all of the data are equally important; it often considers that all of the data are complete and noise-free. These weaknesses limit its utility, because real data such as those that must be analysed in processing social networks, fraud detection do not satisfy the restrictions. The aim of this project is to develop theoretical and practical advances in OL that overcome the existing weaknesses.Read moreRead less

Data analytics in video surveillance and social computing is a problem because data are represented by multiple heterogeneous features. This project will develop a multiview complete space learning framework to exploit heterogeneous properties to represent images obtained from sparse camera networks. It will integrate multiple features to identify people and understand behaviour, to build a database of activities occurring in a wide area of surveillance. It will expand frontier technologies and safeguard Australia by providing warnings for hazardous (for example, overcrowding, trespassing), criminal, and terrorist situations. Results will be applicable internationally and enhance Australia’s role in machine learning and computer vision communities.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a new framework for the detection and quantification of cancer biomarkers in diagnostic and histopathology images with discriminative modelling of intrinsic structures. The framework will be the first computerised solution to provide automated, quantitative annotations of cancer imaging biomarkers at the macroscopic and microscopic levels to support standardised reporting of image interpretation. It will help to alleviate the inter-observer variability and time-consuming process of manual analysis. The project aims to advance fundamental biomedical imaging research in generalised visual structure extraction and classification, and enable large-scale translational research in systems pathology for personalised cancer care.Read moreRead less

This project will develop an improved breast cancer computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that incorporates mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. This system will be based on recently developed deep learning techniques, which have the capacity to process multi-modal data in a unified and optimal manner. The advantage of this technique is that it is able to automatically learn both the relevant features to analyse in each modality and the hidden relationships between them. The use of deep belief networks has produced promising results in several fields, such as speech recognition, and so this project believes that our approach has the potential to improve both the sensitivity and specificity of breast cancer detection.Read moreRead less
Deep reinforcement learning for discovering and visualising biomarkers. This project aims to develop novel methods for discovering and visualising optimal bio-markers from chest computed tomography images based on extensions of recently developed deep reinforcement learning techniques. The extensions proposed in this project will advance medical image analysis by allowing an efficient analysis of large dimensionality inputs in their original high resolution. In addition, this project will be the first approach capable of discovering previously unknown biomarkers associated with important clinical outcomes. The project will validate the approach on a real-world case study data set concerning the prediction of five-year survival of chronic disease.Read moreRead less
A general Bayesian multilinear analysis framework for human behaviour recognition. Smart information use is essential for effective video surveillance in order to guard against accidents, fight crime and combat terrorism. In this project advanced probabilistic methods will be applied to visual surveillance information, to warn of impending accidents and to track criminals and terrorists and predict their behaviours.

This project aims to equip machines with a human-likeability to synergistically harness multiple information sources for the purpose of optimal decision-making. This project will produce the next great step for machine intelligence - laying the theoretical foundation for the learning of multiple views and building the next generation of intelligent systems which can accommodate multiple information sources. This research is fundamental to the creation of intelligent systems that elegantly tackle varieties of big data. This should benefit science, society, and the economy nationally through applications including autonomous vehicle development, sensor technologies, and human behaviour analysis.Read moreRead less
A theoretical framework for practical partial fingerprint identification. Fingerprints captured from a crime scene are often partial and poor quality which makes it difficult to identify the criminal suspects from large databases. This project will find mathematical models which can estimate the missing information located in the blank areas of a partial fingerprint and effectively identify it.

Dynamic Visual Scene Gist Recognition using a Probabilistic Inference Framework. How can we see the forest without intentionally looking for the trees? How can we tell traffic is flowing smoothly on a busy highway without identifying vehicles or measuring their speed? These are the questions that inspire this research project. How can we tell traffic is flowing smoothly on a busy highway without identifying vehicles or measuring their speed? These are the questions that inspire this research project. Humans are endowed with the ability to grasp the ‘gist’ or overall meaning of a complex visual scene from a single glance and without attention to details. The aim of this project is to develop new computational vision models that combine biological visual processing with probabilistic inference for gist recognition. The developed models will be able to mimic human vision by analysing a complex dynamic scene rapidly and classifying its semantic categories, without identifying individual objects.Read moreRead less
