The project industry partner, Invensys Rail Systems, has a major design group in Australia, who work with railway signalling systems throughout the world. Invensys are keen to adopt new technologies to more efficiently and effectively implement signalling functions. However, the safety-critical nature of railway signalling means that any new technology must be analysed in detail to bring it to an acceptable technical readiness level. The outcomes of this research will be an improved technical readiness level for FPGAs in signalling systems, and this will allow Invensys' Australian design group to develop new technologies and allow them to compete more effectively in the global marketplace.Read moreRead less

The proposed fellowship will thereby enhance Australia's capacity in the exploitation of high-performance computing and will give it a strong position in the new field of graphics card based simulations. The computer cluster built during the fellowship will also be an outstanding environment for the training of students. In addition, while Australia has a strong tradition in star cluster astronomy, it has so far not captured a leadership role in the theoretical analysis. The four years of this fellowship will allow it to establish a world-leading position in star cluster simulations.Read moreRead less
IMPACTS OF RIVER NUTRIENTS ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF LAGOON. While salinity was one of the first properties of the ocean to be studied, it is one of the last to be measured by remote sensing. A prototype air borne salinity mapper will be used in this project along with an airborne multi-spectral sampler to develop a new approach to the study of river plumes. The salinity and nutrient densities will be traced to determine the destination of river runoff. Outcomes will assist the management of ....IMPACTS OF RIVER NUTRIENTS ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF LAGOON. The salinity and nutrient densities will be traced to determine the destination of river runoff. Outcomes will assist the management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and land management near the coast, and will improve our understanding of the carbon sink in coastal waters.Read moreRead less

This proposal seeks to establish a new national capability for airborne remote sensing of key environmental variables. It will enable high-resolution mapping of near-surface soil moisture, land surface salinity and temperature, and ocean surface salinity and temperature. It will be a new tool for hydrologic, atmospheric and oceanic researchers, providing unprecedented detail on characteristics critical to our understanding and management of the environment. The small instrument size and weight will enable use of a light aircraft as the observing platform, providing the national (and international) research community with an affordable tool, hitherto unavailable.Read moreRead less

Atmospheric integrated research on burdens and oxidative capacity: No single player in the Australian research community can make a large suite of atmospheric composition measurements, while the combined capability of the community is tremendous. Providing a platform to bring this capability together is cost effective and is expected to provide strong scientific return. This defines the requirements for Atmospheric Integrated Research on Burdens and Oxidative capacity (AIR-BOX) to make a valuable contribution to Australian Atmospheric Science research. This project aims to provide a suite of mobile equipment including a chemical ionisation mass spectrometer, an ultraviolet-visible radiation spectrometer, a mini micropulse lidar, an in situ Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and a cloud condensation nuclei counter. It will be capable of remote and autonomous deployment, real-time data transfer and control, a wide range of tracer measurements, flexible configuration, and physical as well as tracer measurements.Read moreRead less
