A hardware accellerated platform for high-fidelity, high speed simulation of infrared scenes. Missiles present a major military and terrorist threat to aircraft and ships. A possible method to detect them is an infrared imaging system which is sensitive to a missile's spectrally unique rocket propulsion exhaust. It is both dangerous and expensive to conduct field trials; so simulation is used extensively. A new airborne facility for environmental, hydrological, atmospheric and oceanic research: high resolution measurement of soil moisture, temperature and salinity. This proposal seeks to establish a new national capability for airborne remote sensing of key environmental variables. It will enable high-resolution mapping of near-surface soil moisture, land surface salinity and temperature, and ocean surface salinity and temperature. Nickel iron sulphide mineralogy: the link between mineral transformations and microstructure and magnetic properties. This project is about measuring the rate at which minerals transform or react and how metal diffusion controls these reactions. Metal diffusion in sulphides is much more rapid that in silicates and is still very significant at low temperatures (< 300 C). In this project, we are trying to measure the rate at which the principal ore of nickel, pentlandite, transforms to violarite ....Nickel iron sulphide mineralogy: the link between mineral transformations and microstructure and magnetic properties. Environmentally Benign Flotation Chemicals. The research described in this proposal and the anticipated outcomes are concerned with replacing toxic and environmentally hazardous chemicals used in the mineral processing industry with benign chemicals that are biodegradable and have low toxicity. Replacing these chemicals reduces the risk of workplace injuries and damage to the environment that could be caused by industrial accidents.
Evaluation of reaction mechanisms and products in acid rock drainage treatments. There are more than 54 sites in Australia managing major ARD wastes (either >10% of the waste or >10M tonnes) with another 62 sites with less ARD. At operating sites, the annual costs are $60M p.a.; over 15 years, a total cost of $900M for the whole industry. We propose an alternative model in which sand is provided by longshore transport to deep water at high sea level north of Fraser Island, SE Queensland. Here we will test the validity of our new model by site studies of sea bottom morphology, composition and dynamics.
