Combining mathematical programming and constraint programming to solve large-scale integrated scheduling problems. This project will target major savings in the airline industry, with resulting benefits for others such as tourism. The efficient use of airline fuel, which will be directly addressed in the project, is very important for the environment. The efficient use of airline fuel, which will be directly addressed in the project, is very important for the environment. The algorithms developed can improve cost and quality of service for Australian transportation, manufacturing and other industries.
The solutions developed within the project will be sold by the industrial partner, CTI, into major companies worldwide, and the technology will be used to develop further products.
Finally the project will extend Australia's lead in constraint programming and expertise in optimisation. This creates a major opportunity for the Australian software industry.

Improving external validity of stated choice experiments. This project aims to deliver more accurate estimates of choice behaviour by reducing biases due to choice task complexity in surveys as well as design artefacts. Extracting 'true' preferences is challenging, not only due to possible hypothetical bias, but also due to increasingly complex choice tasks and the existence of design artefacts. This project will investigate the latter two in the context of marketing, transport, health, and environmental economics, and proposes new methodologies to extract preferences that more closely reflect true behaviour in real markets.Read moreRead less
Synchromodal container logistics for Australia. Synchromodal container logistics for Australia. This project aims to develop advanced mathematical optimization models and algorithms to create multi-modal logistics approaches for container movements in and out of Australia’s busy ports. The increasingly congested capital cities of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne need to find new ways of moving an increasing volume of containerized freight. Moving from trucks to rail is expected to reduce pollution and road congestion, but is only possible if highly efficient modes of operation can be developed. Research into system design and operational scheduling is expected to achieve the required efficiency for multi-modal logistics that will reduce air pollution and road congestion.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop predictive data analytics and real-time traffic control and safety models for multimodal management of urban corridors, serving two salient objectives: (1) optimising person-throughput of multimodal traffic; while (2) minimising safety risks for all modes. The outcome will be an automated, sensor-based platform to monitor traffic flows from all modes and make proactive and coordinated control decisions in real-time. The expected benefits are profound; the developed algorithms and platform will significantly reduce traffic congestion, travel delays and safety risks for all modes of transport, especially for vulnerable road users (e.g. pedestrians and cyclists).Read moreRead less

The project aims to develop smart transport solutions for Australia's sprawling mega-cities with their complex challenges to provide mobility and equitable access, and with their susceptibility to failure in cases of disasters. In particular, the project will develop software establishing intelligent and self-organizing transport management in urban environments. The project has potential to increase the mobility of citizens, even in low-density suburbs, by reducing the desire for individual car traffic at the same time. Since a self-organizing transport management works ad-hoc, it can be deployed also in devastated areas, e.g., after disasters.Read moreRead less

This project aims to build analytics for controlling a fleet of autonomous trucks and drones working in tandem to deliver retail goods and disaster relief. This project expects to develop new mathematical and artificial intelligence algorithms for routing and scheduling the vehicles and for directing the multi-modal transfer of goods between vehicles in real-time as traffic conditions change. Expected outcomes of this project include new theories and technologies that enable a central computer to remotely control the autonomous fleet for maximum efficiency. Benefits in transport and logistics include improved freight productivity through reducing costs and delivery times.Read moreRead less
Virtual Collaborative Logistics and Partner to Partner Information Systems. Increasingly there is a tendency around the world for logistics companies that provide transport and warehousing services to band together to share their physical resources so they can extend their reach beyond their current region of operation. Increasingly there is a tendency around the world for logistics companies that provide transport and warehousing services to band together to share their physical resources so they can extend their reach beyond their current region of operation. When this is coupled with internet ordering and status monitoring one has an e-logistics company that is a virtual logistics provider that gives access to these shared resources. Such a virtual collaborative logistics consortium requires very strong partner-to-partner IT support and communication. This project investigates the use of XML (Extensible Mark-up Language) enabled mobile software agents to provide this support.Read moreRead less
CEWAY: Cognitively ergonomic wayfinding directions for location-based services. This project develops qualitative models of wayfinding directions based on landmarks (e.g., 'to the hospital') and common spatial predicates (e.g. 'near to'). This project develops qualitative models of wayfinding directions based on landmarks (e.g., 'to the hospital') and common spatial predicates (e.g. 'near to'). These models provide a basis for selecting salient features in different contexts and combining these features with vague spatial predicates. Such wayfinding directions require less cognitive workload and lead to higher success rates in wayfinding than current approaches. The project develops an integrated formal model of context-dependent salience and navigation under uncertainty. A demonstrator will be implemented based on the industry partners' software platform and data. Human subject tests using the demonstrator software will be used to verify the efficacy of our approach.Read moreRead less
CATCH: Children, Active Travel, Connectedness and Health. This project will explore built and social environmental influences on children's independent mobility, active travel and health.
