Fabrication strategies for nanophotonic devices. The project will develop novel strategies to engineer nanophotonic entities to control and guide light at the nanoscale. These nanostructures will open up new avenues for integrated multifunctional devices spanning sensing, light emission and quantum communications, positioning Australia at the frontier of nanoscience and quantum technologies.
Nanophotonic tandem designs for high efficiency solar cells. This project will develop high-efficiency tandem solar cells that combine established silicon cell technology with novel low-cost thin-film solar cells. It will incorporate nanostructured layers between the cells that selectively trap different wavelengths of light, maximising light absorption in the top cell. This will make it possible to use a very thin top cell, reducing the requirements on electronic quality of the material. This p ....Nanophotonic tandem designs for high efficiency solar cells. It will incorporate nanostructured layers between the cells that selectively trap different wavelengths of light, maximising light absorption in the top cell. This will make it possible to use a very thin top cell, reducing the requirements on electronic quality of the material. This project will also develop self-assembly techniques to enable the new nanostructures to be fabricated quickly and cheaply but with a high degree of control. Such cells will allow open the door to higher efficiencies, and lower costs, than is achievable with conventional solar cells.Read moreRead less
Three dimensional nano-lithography: combined electron and ion beam fabrication. By adding one more dimension to a planar (hence two dimensional - 2D) lithography, it will become possible to structure and texture materials in three dimensions (3D) by combining electron beam lithography (2D) and ion beam milling (3D) with the highest precision of several nanometres. This will open new applications in photonics and sensing.
Rapid Pathogen Detection using Super-Sensitive Multiplexing Nanophotonic Probes. Responding to an urgent need to advance rapid molecular diagnostics, this project aims to explore new photonics and biochemistry approaches to DNA recognition. It is anchored on proprietary light-emitting nanodots which have single-molecule sensitivity in conjunction with tunable optical identities. The project aims to develop a multiplexing reagent library of DNA probes to sense trace DNA molecules and to recognise ....Rapid Pathogen Detection using Super-Sensitive Multiplexing Nanophotonic Probes. Responding to an urgent need to advance rapid molecular diagnostics, this project aims to explore new photonics and biochemistry approaches to DNA recognition. It is anchored on proprietary light-emitting nanodots which have single-molecule sensitivity in conjunction with tunable optical identities. The project aims to develop a multiplexing reagent library of DNA probes to sense trace DNA molecules and to recognise multiple pathogens in a single assay. This innovation aims to create a hybrid-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology platform for current industry-standard pathogen detection tests. The outcomes of the project aim to enable DNA based pathogen diagnostics within 90 minutes, four times faster than the current tests.Read moreRead less

Aims: This project aims to advance optical nanoresonators and ultra-thin materials in the infrared spectral region. The project aims to use this knowledge to demonstrate an infrared spectrometer on a chip.
Significance: Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful method for identifying and study matter but is carried out using instruments that are generally large, heavy, power hungry and costly.
Expected outcomes: It is expected that this project will generate knowledge that will allow dramatic reductions in the size, weight, power consumption and cost of infrared spectrometers.
Benefits: This should allow infrared spectrometers to be used in applications for which the size/weight/power consumption/cost of current approaches prevent their use.

The current gold-standard assays for examining receptor-ligand interactions require expensive and costly fluorescent or radioactive labels or proteomics processes. This project aims to develop Artificial Photonic Cells by directly coating photonic crystals with cell membranes. The Artificial Photonic Cells retain the protein receptors in their native cell membrane environment and allow for label-free monitoring of the receptor-ligand interactions using inexpensive miniature spectrometers - radically transforming these assays. This would generate fundamental and applied knowledge of materials sciences, photonic, and biointerfaces for label-free, ultra-sensitive, and selective assays to enable future drug and diagnostics target discovery. This project aims to develop a small, lightweight and low cost chip for accurate spectral measurements, using recent advances in nano-optics. Optical spectrometers are widely used in science and industry but are large, heavy and expensive. The new chip could enable hand-held devices with performance comparable to large laboratory instruments. It could be revolutionary for colour matching, i.e. determining the colours of materials, offering unprecedented accuracy and robustness to illumination conditions given the size, weight and cost of the device. This technology is anticipated to foster the development of new products using the chip; and make Australia a leader in nano-optics research.Read moreRead less
