The Mineral factor: strategic minerals, imperial resources and global politics (1895-1995). With the emergence of Asia, the political control of 'rare earths' vital to high-tech industries has prompted international diplomatic and commercial concern. This project explores the history of 'strategic minerals' and assesses the role of minerals policy in achieving both 'mineral security' and environmental sustainability.
Violence on the Australian Colonial Frontier, 1788-1960. How many Aborigines and settlers were killed on the Australian frontier? Were they mostly killed in ones and twos or in mass killings? How can we know? These questions are of first national importance in understanding the past. This project takes a fresh approach to frontier violence by employing new analytical methods to investigate the complex array of sources to produce new estimates of casualties 1788 to 1960. This project has a special significance for how Australians understand the history of their country's relationship with the United States and the origins of Australia's comprehensive engagement with Asia. Islamist Militias, the Military and Indonesia’s Authoritarian Turn. This project examines the relationship between Islamist militias and the Indonesian military. Adopting a multi-scalar approach, it assesses this relationship nationally and in Aceh, a province with a long history of military–militia relations and Islamisation of political life. In the first attempt to systematically locate current developments in their historical context, this study will draw on interviews and archival research ....Islamist Militias, the Military and Indonesia’s Authoritarian Turn. This project traces and analyses connections between public health policies and immigration policies between 1901 and 2001 in Australia. It interrogates the changing regulation of Australia's population through border control and health screening of aspiring immigrants and citizens, as well as tourists, refugees and illegal entrants.
