Spurred by a potential terrorist threat from citizens, the government has proposed expanded powers to strip a person of their Australian citizenship. Spurred by a potential terrorist threat from citizens, the government has proposed expanded powers to strip a person of their Australian citizenship. Proposed as an instrument of counter-terrorism policy, the expansion of powers over citizenship also has significant implications for fundamental principles of Australian law and for the very nature of Australian citizenship, which is a key legal link between individual and state. The project plans to draw on the experience of countries comparable with Australia and relevant theory. It will generate groundbreaking insights into Australia’s role historically in protecting stateless persons, and identify the protection needs of stateless persons in Australia today. Expected outcomes include improving the quality of Australian administrative decision-making, and making an important scholarly contribution to an emerging area ....Understanding Statelessness in Australian Law and Practice. The central objective of this project is to make a substantial and original contribution to legal knowledge by developing a new concept of legal pluralism, and demonstrating its practical significance in the modern legal context. The traditional centralist model of law fails to recognise the co-existance of law with "quasi-legal" and informal normative systems, it deals inadequately with social and cultural difference, and it ....New Concepts in Legal Pluralism: A Theoretical and Practical Analysis. Citizenship and Claims of Belonging in Australian Law and History. What does it mean legally to ‘be’ an Australian? What role does the law play in shaping theories of belonging to Australia, and concepts of citizenship and Australian nationhood? The Project will address these questions, exploring key constitutional cases in which individual claims to ‘belong’ were the central issue. It will address fundamental issues about the relationship between citizenship and membership of the Australian com ....Citizenship and Claims of Belonging in Australian Law and History. This project will provide a conceptual framework and policy options to develop Australia's legal response to the use of nanotechnology in military and security settings through collaborations with experts in the United States.

The project aims to investigate growing divergence between countries’ inward foreign investment policies and their increasing links to national security. Novel interdisciplinary collaboration integrating political science, economics and law promises insights into these policy shifts, which appear driven by digitalisation of the economy and the rise of emerging markets (eg China) and State-linked investment.
