Mental illness encompasses a multitude of devastating conditions that present a major burden to the Australian economy. In this project powerful tools for determining the three-dimensional shapes and functions of proteins will be utilised to gain new knowledge about the molecular bases of various mental illnesses. The project will involve extensive use of the Australian Synchrotron Facility that is due to open in 2007. This knowledge gained from the project will be used to develop new therapeutic drugs to ameliorate or combat mental diseases in partnership with the Australian Biotechnology Industry.Read moreRead less
Sustaining neuronal communication through bulk endocytosis. Brain activities such as learning and memory rely on the ability of neurons to communicate. This research will improve our understanding of how synaptic vesicles recycle during periods of intense synaptic activity. This is a fundamental process relevant to neuronal communication, insulin release, hormone secretion, and allergic responses in health and disease and therefore has broad significance. This work will enhance Australia's exist ....Sustaining neuronal communication through bulk endocytosis. This work will enhance Australia's existing strength in cell biology and neuroscience and provide high quality training for an undergraduate student and post-doctoral scientist.Read moreRead less
Membrane excitability and cellular calcium regulation in the peripheral nervous system under different (patho)-physiological conditions and in inflammatory disease. Studies of cytokine action on neurons and muscle give new insights into functional responses of the nervous system to systemic inflammation and sepsis. In some countries, sepsis is the third most frequent cause of death following heart attack. Elucidating the pathomechanisms allows to develop therapeutic strategies. Electrophysiology ....Membrane excitability and cellular calcium regulation in the peripheral nervous system under different (patho)-physiological conditions and in inflammatory disease. Electrophysiology, Ca2+ regulation and optical membrane potentiometry allow us to monitor early changes in disease on a (sub)cellular level. Experiments on Ca2+ regulation and ion channel function in muscle with different cholesterol membrane contents will help to understand pathomechanisms in high cholesterol diseases, e.g. obesity, on the membrane level long before cardiovascular effects become prominent.Read moreRead less

The proposed research will significantly contribute to a better understanding of the wide range of physiological processes underlying mechanosensory transduction in living cells. The direct benefit for Australian science consists of: (i) strengthening international links with leading overseas laboratories, and (ii) accessing the state-of-the-art expertise not available in Australia. The acquired knowledge will aid in developing and designing artificial tactile sensors inspired by their biological models studied in this project. Long-term, the project is expected to make an original contribution towards developing new technologies and novel medical applications, both of which promise to be of great national benefit.Read moreRead less

Funder
Australian Research Council
Funding Amount
$542,000.00
Summary
Biomolecular discovery and analysis facility. This facility will provide Australian researchers with unrivalled access to advanced cell visualisation and analysis tools, which until very recently were only available to the pharmaceutical industry and large US and European institutions. The facility will allow new approaches to identifying novel natural products and understanding cell signalling pathways. Knowledge of these pathways and the identification of molecules that can affect them are key ....Biomolecular discovery and analysis facility. This facility will provide Australian researchers with unrivalled access to advanced cell visualisation and analysis tools, which until very recently were only available to the pharmaceutical industry and large US and European institutions. The facility will allow new approaches to identifying novel natural products and understanding cell signalling pathways. Knowledge of these pathways and the identification of molecules that can affect them are keys to understanding normal cellular physiology and identifying drug-like molecules able to inhibit malfunctioning pathways found in different disease such as cancer. The facility will accellerate drug discovery and basic research in cell biology and underpin National Research Priorities.Read moreRead less
