Instrumentation for combined seismic and electromagnetic Earth sounding. The set of geophysical recorders will provide the means to enhance understanding of the structure of the Australian continent in 3-D. The interpretation of multiple images of Earth structure will help to link features in the crust and mantle beneath, and provide controls on the evolution and assembly of the present continent, with a major contribution to possible geotransects as recommended in the 2003 National Strategic Pl ....Instrumentation for combined seismic and electromagnetic Earth sounding. The set of geophysical recorders will provide the means to enhance understanding of the structure of the Australian continent in 3-D. The interpretation of multiple images of Earth structure will help to link features in the crust and mantle beneath, and provide controls on the evolution and assembly of the present continent, with a major contribution to possible geotransects as recommended in the 2003 National Strategic Plan for the Geosciences. Combining seismic and electromagnetic methods will provide both geochemeical and geophysical constaints, e.g., on zones of alteration and shear with the potential for deep mineralisation. The paradox of choice: Unravelling complex superannuation decisions. Australia has been a world-leader in retirement savings policy, but there remains a pervasive lack of understanding about how best to communicate complex financial information to decision-makers, along with a push by government for clearer disclosure and greater financial literacy. Australia has been a world-leader in retirement savings policy, but there remains a pervasive lack of understanding about how best to communicate complex financial information to decision-makers, along with a push by government for clearer disclosure and greater financial literacy. This project will inform regulators and the superannuation industry on how choices are made and how to present clearer, better-designed information to be understood by ordinary participants, thus encouraging active, well-informed participation rather than passive 'default' decisions. More efficient investment and benefit choices will improve the economic welfare of retirees, reduce the burden on the working-age population and improve fiscal sustainability.Read moreRead less
Achieving a Skilled and Sustainable Aged Care Workforce for Australia. Demand for aged care services in Australia has reached record levels and is set to rise steeply due to population ageing. The Productivity Commission identified the sector’s need to provide more care services, to expand consumer-directed care and to improve the quality of care. Currently, there is little evidence as to how the workforce can expand and change to meet these challenges. This project aims to provide new evidence ....Achieving a Skilled and Sustainable Aged Care Workforce for Australia. This project aims to provide new evidence on how to attract, retain and up-skill workers in a rapidly expanding demand environment, as the sector strives to achieve a sustainable and skilled workforce fit for the future needs of older Australians.Read moreRead less

This project aims to create a breakthrough switching dynamics approach and new technology to speed up finding optimal solutions. It will develop a distributed switching dynamics based optimisation scheme for global optimisation problems in industrial big-data environments where timely decision making is required. It will result in a practical technology for industry optimisation problems such as economic energy dispatch in smart grids and optimal charging and discharging tasks in a large network of electric vehicles, helping Australian power industry improve efficiency and security, as well as training the next generation scientists and engineers for Australia in this emerging field.Read moreRead less
Supporting dynamic multidimensional entrepreneurial resilience in Australia. This project aims to model entrepreneurial resilience, its formation and its influence on how creative transformation occurs, and whether ex ante adaptive capacity is in turn enhanced by having mastered crises. This project aims to model entrepreneurial resilience, its formation and its influence on how creative transformation occurs, and whether ex ante adaptive capacity is in turn enhanced by having mastered crises. The project proposes a theoretical model to holistically measure resilience across the life course. Using longitudinal data for self-employed individuals in Australia the project analyses the impact of crisis and economic policy on entrepreneur’s behaviour and SMEs entry exit decisions. The project informs policy making through employing discrete choice experiments to elicit entrepreneur’s preferences for government policy and support post crisis. Read moreRead less
Making Music Work: Sustainable Portfolio Careers for Australian Musicians. This project plans to explore the conditions and strategies needed for musicians to sustain successful portfolio careers. Most musicians have ‘portfolio careers’, combining aspects of performance, recording, creation, music direction, teaching, community activities, health, retail and a presence in online environments. This phenomenon — often across music genres — is widespread but not well understood. The project involve ....Making Music Work: Sustainable Portfolio Careers for Australian Musicians. The project involves surveys and 12 in-depth case studies of individual musicians or ensembles that will aim to identify key success factors and obstacles. This information is intended to inform opportunities for training, development and support.Read moreRead less
Dispersal and gene flow in habitat-forming algae. The temperate coast of Australia has a unique and diverse algal flora. Many of these algae play a central role in subtidal ecology by providing habitat to an astonishing diversity of taxa. Despite this, we have no understanding of levels of gene flow within and among populations of habitat forming algae or how such populations persist in nature. By addressing this lack of knowledge, my research will contribute information that is critical for the ....Dispersal and gene flow in habitat-forming algae. Despite this, we have no understanding of levels of gene flow within and among populations of habitat forming algae or how such populations persist in nature. By addressing this lack of knowledge, my research will contribute information that is critical for the conservation and management of algal habitats. This is particularly pertinent because anthropogentic stressors are beginning to precipitate significant changes in algal forests along Australia's coastline. Read moreRead less

This state-of-the-art laser facility will increase our scientific understanding of industrial processes by providing valuable information on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles for rapidly changing flow fields. Previously it was not possible to do this, and the knowledge gained will be applied to develop more efficient and environmentally sustainable operations. For example, many current processes have high energy input but scientific evidence suggests that it can be reduced if the embodied energy of the flow is properly utilised. Importantly, this utilisation often leads to increased yields and product quality. The facility will greatly assist researchers and industry collaborators in developing processes for the 21st century.Read moreRead less

Many chemical reactions occurring in solid materials during heating significantly affect the materials' stability, and subsequently affects the processes of production of clean energy, material synthesis, catalyst preparation, and nanotechnology. No equipment currently exists in Australia that will mitigate the wide range of conditions in such reactions in materials processing. This situation impedes research progress in Australia, disadvantages Australian research students, and ultimately makes our research less competitive internationally. The establishment of the proposed apparatus will increase the competitiveness of Australian science and engineering, and contribute to the development of new Australian technologies that are important to the Australian economy and to environmental sustainability.Read moreRead less
