Plants have considerable potential for the bioremediation ("phytoremediation") of contaminated soils, including soils polluted with heavy metals. Progress has been made in understanding the physiological and biochemical mechanisms by which plants accumulate and detoxify heavy metals. One important aspect of metal detoxification is the transport of metals across cell membranes. The recently completed genome project for the model plant Arabidopsis has identified a family of genes encoding heavy metal transport proteins. This project aims to investigate the roles of these genes in metal detoxification. In the longer term this knowledge can be applied to the improvement of phytoremediation processes.Read moreRead less

Zinc-deficiency is one of the most widespread factors limiting crop production and affects many soils of south-east and south-west Australia. Certain zinc-efficient (ZE) crop cultivars are able to grow well under zinc deficient conditions but the genetic basis for ZE is not well understood. Using a model organism such as Arabidopsis to identify genes in plants that are important in zinc transport and homeostasis will ultimately allow us to assess whether the homologous genes in crop species are responsible for ZE. This may contribute to more rapid and directed strategies in breeding ZE crop cultivars.Read moreRead less
Evolution of halophytes: a phyloinformatic approach to understanding and exploiting the traits underlying salt-tolerance in plants. Salinity is an increasing burden on the Australian economy & environment, with >2 million ha of salt-affected land, at an annual cost to agriculture over $187 million. One solution is to exploit naturally salt-tolerant plants to increase productive agricultural land and restore salt-affected environments. To do this, we must increase basic knowledge of the diversity ....Evolution of halophytes: a phyloinformatic approach to understanding and exploiting the traits underlying salt-tolerance in plants. Salinity is an increasing burden on the Australian economy & environment, with >2 million ha of salt-affected land, at an annual cost to agriculture over $187 million. One solution is to exploit naturally salt-tolerant plants to increase productive agricultural land and restore salt-affected environments. To do this, we must increase basic knowledge of the diversity & distribution of salt-tolerance. This project is the first to use DNA sequences from thousands of species to understand the evolution of salt-tolerance in order to provide the foundation for the development of new crop varieties, selection of species that can be developed for bioremediation, and identification of traits that will be profitable targets for breeding programs. Infrakingdom Alveolata: searching for a defining structural feature. This project will establish the first molecular nexus between a cellular structure currently used to define an Infrakingdom of life. It will aid in the higher order systematics of our microscopic diversity and allow us to interpret how important parasites learned to penetrate host cells to establish infection. We will train excellent graduate and Honours students in cellular and molecular biology.

Australia has an outstanding international reputation in the fields of Ecology and Evolution. This study will reinforce Australia's excellence in these fields. Sexual conflict is a topic of great scientific interest because it has important implications for evolutionary theory and our understanding of the diverse strategies that animals use to attract or repel potential mates. Consequently, articles on this topic feature regularly in top international scientific journals. In addition, research on the unique social behaviours of Australian animals holds general public interest and plays an important role in attracting young people to careers in science. Surfaces such as those presented by an air-liquid interface or air-borne nanoparticles exert significant effects on protein aggregation in biological environments. We will develop a comprehensive theoretical and experimental approach to study the effects of such surfaces on the self assembly of proteins leading to disease causing amyloid fibrils. This will provide a molecular level understanding of protein self-association and a rational basis for the design of inhibitors to stop protein aggregation. The work will also establish design principles for new nanomaterials via the controlled self assembly of proteins on surfaces.Read moreRead less
