We propose a high-performance computing and web facility for genome bioinformatics. It will provide a common software development environment in support of molecular biosciences, systems biology and complex systems modelling at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at University of Queensland, and at Queensland University of Technology. The platform will support Australia's first genome-scale bioinformatics research website, with unique software and mirrors of the IBM Biological Pattern Discovery, UC San Diego MEME/MetaMEME/MAST, and NGI comparative genomics websites. Australian/NZ researchers will access the facility at no cost for high-throughput use of unique software, website mirrors and other important tools for genome bioinformatics.Read moreRead less

Timed Commitment Schemes to Smooth Internet Bottlenecks, Defend against Denial of Service Attacks, and Bypass Some Legal Problems of Enccryption. Bottlenecks on the Internet and Denial of Service attacks on a server are both caused by excessive demands made on a system. This proposal is to reduce the ill-effects of either by building on our previous theoretical work on strongboxes of combinatorial designs. In the case of bottlenecks, the demands are legitimate but badly timed, and our approach will redistribute the demands more evenly. In the case of Denial of Service attacks, the demands are malicious, and our approach will respond in such a way as to deplete the resources of the attacker.Read moreRead less
Yield strength and plastic flow of heterogeneous materials: Designing optimal composites and porous materials. A major goal of materials science is to design materials with improved functionality at lower weight, cost and size. It is important to guide this expensive and time-consuming process with sophisticated computer modelling. In this project we aim to model how and why composite and porous materials fail when they are placed under stress. Our results will make materials design more efficient by providing a valuable experimental interpretive tool and a theoretical map for material optimization. Our models will also provide crucial information needed for modelling the behavior of composites in applications.Read moreRead less
Coarse Grained Parallel Algorithms. Various fields of research face barriers created by problems that are computationally hard and/or require processing of large amounts of data. Various fields of research face barriers created by problems that are computationally hard and/or require processing of large amounts of data. For example, some computational biochemistry methods on protein or gene sequences can not be scaled up to data sets required for human health research because of performance problems. Parallel computing enables new research by increasing the size of solvable problems. In addition to fundamental parallel computing research, this project studies parallel algorithms for structure-based drug design and protein-protein interaction prediction that will enable new biochemistry research, as well as parallel algorithms for data cubes that will help enable the next generation of very large data warehouses.Read moreRead less
Attrition in longitudinal studies: advancing and evaluating statistical methods. Longitudinal studies are a vital tool for monitoring the health and well-being of Australians. They are uniquely placed to examine changes in diseases over time and prospectively collect data on exposure and disease onset. There have been many successful longitudinal studies in Australia that have lead to significant breakthroughs in evidence-based health (e.g. the Nambour Skin Cancer Prevention Trial). Unfortunately all longitudinal studies suffer from attrition, or loss of participants, which leads to questions concerning their validity and generalisability. This project will investigate the causes of attrition, and the effect attrition has on longitudinal studies, in order to improve their design and analysis.Read moreRead less

Algebraic structures such as quantized superalgebras are among the most important discoveries in mathematics and have applications in a wide range of physics. Internationally there has been recent excitement about vertex operators and representations of these algebraic structures and their applications to integrable systems and quantum field theory. I have made significant contributions to this rapidly expanding field, and will capitalize on this success. I will develop a comprehensive theory of these mathematical structures and their applications in the construction of correlation functions and form factors, and in so doing write a definitive monograph on the subject.Read moreRead less
Metallic nanograins: superconducting correlations, Josephson tunneling and conformal field theory. Experimental studies of aluminium grains which are a few nanometres in size have exposed unexpected physical characteristics, including pairing interactions which are responsible for bulk superconductivity. Our previous theoretical work has shown that precise information about these nanograins can be gained in the framework of the exact solution of the BCS model. This project will continue our work in this area with an emphasis on investigating the nature of Josephson tunneling between coupled nanograins. The results of this project will have important applications in emerging technologies such as the implementation of Josephson junctions of nanoscale size.Read moreRead less
