Summary
Hysterectomy is the most common surgical [procedure among Australian women. Too many women still receive an open abdominal surgery, because too few Australian obstetricians and gynaecologists practice laparoscopic hysterectomy. This partnership will develop a model to systematically train practicing surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques. If successful, the model can be rolled out state and nationwide and also adapted for teaching future innovations in surgery.

Summary
Cystic fibrosis is the most common life shortening inherited disease in Caucasians. Lung damage starts in infancy and lung function falls most rapidly in adolescence although why and how this happens and early life determinants are not known. This study takes advantage of a previous study that monitored young children from 3 months to 5 years of life and follows them closely through early adolescence to investigate the protective and risk factors for falling lung function.

Summary
The aim of this 5-year randomised comtrolled trial is to test the clinical and cost effectiveness of vacuum dressings in reducing the incidence of surgical site infection in obese women undergoing elective and semi-urgent caesarian section. The trial will be conducted at 4 hospitals in south east Queensland. 2,100 women undergoing caesarian section will either receive a vacuum or standard surgical dressing and will be followed for 1 month after surgery.
Strengthening urban slum upgrading and urban governance in cities in Southeast Asia. 1. Improve the approach to evaluating the impact of slum upgrading in building institutional capacity, and thereby, on the longer-term continuity of poverty reduction for poor communities. These lessons can be applied in impoverished settlements in developed and developing countries;
2. Enhance best practice in planning upgrading projects and design of governance frameworks. These lessons can be applied throu ....Strengthening urban slum upgrading and urban governance in cities in Southeast Asia. 1. Despite a strong economy since the early 1990s uneven socioeconomic outcomes remain characteristic of Australian society. The costs to individuals, communities and society itself of these uneven outcomes are significant. Crucially policy needs understand the multi-dimensional nature of the drivers of these uneven outcomes so as to ameliorate the negative cost. Participation in the administration of justice: deaf citizens as jurors. This project will pioneer international research on legal signed language interpreting and jury service; the results are likely to innovate law reform. The expected outcome will be to overturn previously held common law that deaf people cannot serve as jurors due to having an interpreter as the 13th person in the jury room as well as confidentiality issues.
Towards a transformative model: re-shaping transitions between school and post-school life. This project aims to transform senior schooling to support students with limited levels of educational achievement secure productive transitions to lives beyond school. Starting with understanding what productive transitions means for past-students, the project engages with current students, teachers, school leaders, community organisations and employers to develop, trial and evaluate effective senior sch ....Towards a transformative model: re-shaping transitions between school and post-school life. This project aims to transform senior schooling to support students with limited levels of educational achievement secure productive transitions to lives beyond school.
