Novel gas-liquid columns for liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. This project aims to design distillation and absorption columns, perhaps the most important unit operations in a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, and whose optimization is integral to overall performance of any LNG plant. This project will use 3D printers to rapidly prototype concepts of columns and their internals, and test them using flow characterization tools and numerical models. The final outcome of the project will be a set of designs of the columns, which should be more efficient, safer and cheaper to operate, and have smaller physical and environmental footprints, thus helping the Australian LNG industry to stay globally competitive.Read moreRead less
Vaporization of heavier gas oil in Fluid Catalytic Cracking risers. Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) is an important refinery operation responsible for about 45 per cent of the total petrol produced. The project is aimed at improving production efficiency of Australian refineries by applying fundamental modelling to the FCC. The outcomes will enable refiners to produce cleaner fuel and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

ARC Research Hub for Basin GEodyNamics and Evolution of SedImentary Systems (GENESIS). This Research Hub aims to undertake simultaneous modelling of deep Earth and surface processes, spanning basin scales to individual sediment grains. The Hub will develop and apply cutting-edge basin simulation approaches to transform the seeding and testing of basin exploration models, extending their viability to complex, inaccessible remote and deep exploration targets. The Hub will fuse multidimensional data into five dimensional basin models (space and time, with uncertainty estimates) by coupling the evolution of mantle flow, crustal deformation, erosion and sedimentary processes, achieving a quantum leap in basin modelling and petroleum systems analysis.Read moreRead less

Australia's oil and gas reserves are primarily dependent on exploration and development in remote offshore deep waters where the operational costs are highest. This is precisely the area where the emerging microtomography-based network model technology will have the most economic impact. The outcome will be of immense scientific interest to the national/international community which has long been studying network models to understand multiphase flow in petroleum reservoirs. This will place Australia in the forefront of this technology. Furthermore, modelling studies of groundwater remediation and geosequestration of greenhouse gases which require a multiphase model will benefit from the project.Read moreRead less
Local scour below offshore pipelines on calcareous sediments. This project will improve predictions of erosion around subsea structures in calcareous sediment, allowing potential pipeline self-burial. This will reduce the considerable costs currently spent on pipeline stabilisation and increase the viability of Australia's offshore resources and the competitiveness of the Australian oil and gas industry.
Hydrodynamic forces on small diameter pipelines laid on natural seabed. This project aims to improve predictions of hydrodynamic forces on small submarine cables and pipelines through comprehensive experimental modelling at 1:1 scale coupled with development of predictive numerical models. The focus will be on forces in unsteady flows. Present industry guidelines do not make allowance for potential reductions in forces for small diameter pipelines whose diameters are a similar length to the effective seabed boundary layer, thereby leading to overly conservative and costly stability design. Results from the experimental program and numerical model developed are expected to be used to improve the current industry design guidelines.Read moreRead less

Piezoelectric ceramics are widely used in advanced engineering applications such as actuators in the automotive industry, sonars for submarine mineral exploration and defence, and a broad range of medical devices, e.g. ultrasound probes. The reliable operational lifetime of these devices is, however, severely limited because they suffer cyclic fatigue leading to both degradation in performance and device failure. The proposed project seeks to develop an understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue and develop a design model for engineers such that piezoelectric ceramic devices can be operated for longer periods with higher levels of reliability.Read moreRead less
