EPOS: Efficient Processing of Moving Object Streams in Data Management Systems. Advanced moving object data management systems are becoming a core technology for a large variety of applications such as traffic management and inventory tracking. These applications play a ubiquitous, critical role in our daily lives. In the same way as the first prototype of a relational database paved the way for successive relational database management systems, we envision that EPOS will form the foundation for a new generation of moving object databases. EPOS is designed to process a large number of concurrently running continuous monitoring queries on a massive set of moving objects with frequent updates.

This project will benefit the National Research Priority on Frontier Technology with applications in video surveillance, smart home design, and patient monitoring. It will enable Australia to lead the world in setting up coding standards and thus impact directly on the manufacturing initiatives of the multimedia communication and entertainment industries. Telecommunication industries will be the immediate beneficiary by enabling quality live video transmissions at low bit rates in a cost-effective manner. This project will improve the ability of large organisations to operate virtually across huge distances in Australia with the aid of reliable multimedia communications using distributed devices of limited power and processing capacity.

    Summary
Data Mining by Clustering in Very Large Relational Databases. Many commercial and governmental entities possess very large relational data that cannot be feasibly analyzed by today's computers, e.g., gene expression data, product usage databases and telecommunication call records. The clustering tools developed in this project will have a significant benefit on many business processes that involve clustering this type of data, such as fraud detection and market segmentation.

Modelling and Removal of Noise and Artefacts in Surveillance and Security Video for Forensic Image Analysis and Enhancement. This project spearheads research in advanced digital image and video processing technology, placing Australia at the forefront of both theoretical and applied research to safeguard Australia. It tackles fundamental issues identified in our earlier research in this area and consulting work for Victoria and NSW Police Departments in forensic investigations since 2000. Although the main investigation focuses on video surveillance and security systems for public safety, policing, crime prevention and border control, the outcomes of the investigation will have other applications, including digital photography for fine-art, medical imaging, picture archiving and communication systems for telemedicine and rural healthcare systems.

Digital video coding and compression is an enabling technology and has diversified applications in audiovisual communications, multimedia computing, digital television broadcast and electronic entertainment industries. The project aims at spearheading research in theory, techniques and implementation of perceptual video coding in order to achieve constant and guaranteed quality in visual communications and services. It will explore a new approach to digital video coding other than the constant bit rate coding techniques which have dominated digital video research for the past four decades. It will form a part of the theoretical foundation and principles for the next generation video coding and compression techniques, and may lead to new standards and practice.

Predicting and modelling customer behaviour enables considerable savings in the telecommunications industry and elsewhere. The resulting predictive models facilitate identifying novice users, identifying fraud, responding to users' needs, guiding and advising users, and forwarding useful information. We consider two cutting-edge data mining approaches, Minimum Message Length (developed and led by Monash) and Support Vector Machines, in order to create efficient tailor-made software. Our software will respond to specific groups of users, and their changes over time, rather than just the average user. Moreover, it will integrate the functionalities of existing individual data mining software.

This project has the potential to benefit bionic ear and hearing aid users through the development of signal processing methods that mimic the amazing abilities of the brain. Speech perception performance by bionic ear users has reached a plateau and these new strategies could produce the breakthrough needed to provide the next increase in performance. The benefit for greater improved hearing has enormous benefit and potential for improving the quality of life of the hearing impaired, especially those with severe and profound hearing loss. In addition, the algorithms may provide more robust automatic speech recognition, making this technology more useful in everyday situations; the markets that this would open up are enormous.

The development of a reliable method that is fast and robust to noise will have wide application in many areas, especially computer speech recognition where timing plays a crucial role. Building-blocks similar to those in the brain (spiking neurons) will be used. Automatic techniques will be used to teach groups of spiking neurons the differences between sequences of events by adjusting connections between them. The significance of this approach is that it captures information about timing that is missed in existing techniques.
