Techniques to use stereo vision for improving person identification systems based on face recognition. The broad aim of this project is to use three-dimensional information available by processing images from stereo cameras in order to bridge the gap between constrained face recognition systems and viable systems that work well under varying illumination, changes in pose and variations in spectacles, facial hair and attire. The broad aim of this project is to use three-dimensional information available by processing images from stereo cameras in order to bridge the gap between constrained face recognition systems and viable systems that work well under varying illumination, changes in pose and variations in spectacles, facial hair and attire. Such a system will be useful in passenger verification at airports and as a component of personal identification systems to counter terrorism. The key to successful face location and recognition is an effective combination of all data - range, luminance and colour - and techniques for this will be the discovered outcomes.Read moreRead less

However, even the most advanced storage and retrieval techniques lack the features required to be used singly, or in combination, to fulfil a wide range of user needs and rapid access to multimedia resources, even in a very large video database. The core challenges are indeed to develop efficient, smart and intelligent web-based multimedia mining in Australia and elsewhere. In this project, we will explore techniques and develop algorithms for content-based multimedia retrieval and mining in multimedia databases.Read moreRead less

Solving modern biological problems, especially those involving genome data, requires advanced computational and analytical methods. The huge quantities of data and escalating demands of modern biological research increasingly require the sophistication and power of object-relational database tools. Key techniques include relational data management, pattern recognition, data mining and visualization of biological data. In this project we will develop efficient methodologies and data structures for gathering high-quality approximations of full genomic information, and will use these innovations as the foundation to develop novel, practical tools for clustering and visualization in genomic data mining and database management.

The project creates a federated distributed data infrastructure for research, that encourages data creators to make their data available to other scientists, and encourages users to make use of data available from many sources. The vision is to establish an ICT infrastructure to facilitate a whole-of-environment approach to environmental research. The outcome is a proof-of-concept application based upon a case study of Queensland Environmental Protection Agency’s databases, to gain an in-depth understanding of the complexity, scope and key technological barriers for establishing an ICT infrastructure, to identify where the latest technologies can be used and where the gaps are for these technologies to be used in environmental sciences.Read moreRead less
