Nature makes use of a range of fascinating surface properties, such as the leaves of the Lotus plant which stay clean even in dirty environments. In this project we will explore the molecular properties of novel polymer coated surfaces that-similar to some natural surfaces-can adapt to changing environmental stimuli and be resistant to contamination. Specifically, we aim to develop self-cleaning polymer coatings which can reversibly switch from wettable to non-wettable with changing temperature and humidity. These self-cleaning polymer surfaces with environmentally responsive properties will add value to pre-painted steel products and other coatings.Read moreRead less

The main aim of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art optical and electronic coatings facility for the Australian optoelectronics and nanotechnology research community to develop novel technologies of interest to communications, information technology and nanotechnology industries. The facility will allow the fabrication of a range of active and passive devices including photonic integrated circuits. The facility is flexible enough to allow the deposition of a range of dielectric and metal layers with different structural, optical and electrical characteristics of fundamental as well as applied interest. This facility may open up new opportunities to develop microcavities, nanocrystals, tunable lasers and detectors, novel cantilevers for atomic force microscopy.

On-chip spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging for remote environments. This project aims to investigate techniques and materials for building optical spectrometers based on micromachines, usable in portable ground-based and drone-mounted applications in remote environments. Optical spectroscopy is now an accepted technique for materials detection and analysis. The advent of low-cost drone aircraft makes the potential applications of spectroscopy in an imaging form immense. The project expects the resulting low-cost and highly portable technology will transform Australian industry, including securing Australia’s food supply by improving farming practices, aiding mineral exploration, and enhancing capabilities for monitoring Australia’s coastline.Read moreRead less

The provision of infrastructure for the analysis of thin films will enhance Australia's capabilities in creating new materials and in creating new devices that meet needs in medicine, communications, the environment and security. As devices become smaller, sufaces and interfaces dominate their performance. The new facility will enable researchers to understand the structure and composition of the interior and interfaces of thin films as well as mapping local variations in their key properties. Instruments with unique capabilities will measure elemental composition, crystallographic phase, defect and void distributions and spatially resolved stress, electrical, mechanical and magnetic properties.Read moreRead less
