Summary
Impunity and state violence in Thailand. This project will detail the complexities of the legal and extrajudicial challenges to democracy in Thailand, one of Australia's strategically and economically important Southeast Asian neighbours. The results will offer new historical and theoretical insights on how impunity for state violence affects state formation and nation-building.
Handbooks and Environmental Knowledge in Thailand. This project will contribute to maintaining Australian scholars at the forefront of innovative research in Southeast Asia. The project will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of attitudes towards the environment within the region. Australia has a significant aid investment in the region and this is likely to grow as a result of the White Paper on overseas development aid. Collaboration, Nationalism and Imperial Strategy: Japanese-trained Armies in Northeast Asia 1932-1949. This project analyses the political and military significance of three local armies developed by the Japanese in Manchuria and Mongolia between 1932 and 1945. The project examines archival material and newspapers, as well as conducting fresh interviews, to explain the reasons for Japan's creation of these armies, the reasons why local people took part in them, and the consequences of this participation for Japanese imperialist plans and local nationalist aspirations. China's economic ideas: From Bretton Woods to Bandung. This project aims to provide a comprehensive account of China’s role in shaping the post-World War II international economic order. Though not widely known today, Nationalist and Communist China played a leading role in two key international economic conferences between 1944 and 1955: Bretton Woods and Bandung. Borders and Empires: A Historical Atlas of Northeast Asia, 1636 - 2006. This historical atlas brings insights into the continuing tensions in Northeast Asia, both in the Korean Peninsula, and between China and Russia, where old antagonisms have repeatedly led to armed conflict and where border friction today is exacerbated by economic disparities, population movements and rival nationalist rhetorics. The project is three-fold: (1) complete an in-depth analysis of the politics of land in Vietnam during the second half of the 20th century, (2) through this analysis contribute to a broader understanding of Vietnam's political system, and (3) show the implications of this Vietnam case for comprehending how unorganized, everyday kinds of activity in an authoritarian political system can contribute to significant shifts in national policies. A rigorous scholarly examination, however, has been yet to come. Secondly, it will explore how its role, structure and relations with the state and the public changed (or unchanged) in the post-war peace time.
