This integrated, collaborative project, will explore, in a targeted way, the structure and function of a key group of molecules in a socio-economically important eukaryotic pathogen and their involvement in pathogen-host interactions. Fundamental knowledge and understanding of these molecules will provide a solid foundation for understanding disease processes and finding new intervention strategies for a range of pathogens. This is crucial, given the serious drug resistance problems in pathogens, and residue problems in meat, milk and the environment.Read moreRead less

Infrakingdom Alveolata: searching for a defining structural feature. This project will establish the first molecular nexus between a cellular structure currently used to define an Infrakingdom of life. It will aid in the higher order systematics of our microscopic diversity and allow us to interpret how important parasites learned to penetrate host cells to establish infection. We will train excellent graduate and Honours students in cellular and molecular biology.

This work could yield economic benefits in the long-term through patentable outcomes and will benefit the community by producing high impact research papers, providing training to Australians and forging links with renowned international scientists.Read moreRead less
Mathematical Methods for Next Generation Sequencing. The emergence of a new generation of high throughput genomic sequencing technologies is providing unprecedented opportunities for biological research. Hidden within the huge amounts of data generated by this technology is information about the expression and regulation of genes, and the complex functional purpose of non-coding, so called 'junk', DNA. Development of mathematical and statistical tools is essential to interpreting these data. The ....Mathematical Methods for Next Generation Sequencing. Hidden within the huge amounts of data generated by this technology is information about the expression and regulation of genes, and the complex functional purpose of non-coding, so called 'junk', DNA. Development of mathematical and statistical tools is essential to interpreting these data. The proposed research will enhance Australia's reputation for developing novel quantitative techniques at the cutting edge of modern biology. The proposed project has a broad range of potential applications in biotechnology, particularly in the medical and agricultural industries.Read moreRead less

Because of the Free Radical Theory of Aging, many millions of dollars are spent around the world on dietary antioxidants of unproven efficacy. Many millions of research dollars are spent providing support for this theory but few studies test it rigorously. The first major benefit of this research is worldwide; to refute, or to substantially enhance and focus the current support for the Free Radical Theory. This should help to rationalise and direct funding supplied to these areas. The second benefit is for Australia: aging is a fruitful area for research because of the high general public interest and for training because of its multidisciplinary nature, and funding in Australia is very low by international standards. Ecosystem level impacts of climate change on a temperate grassland. The sustainable use of temperate native pastures is important economically because of grazing and for biodiversity since they are home to many threatened plants. The sustainable use of temperate native pastures is important economically because of grazing and for biodiversity since they are home to many threatened plants. Native pasture sustainability depends on maintaining species diversity and vegetation productivity, both of which have been shown to change in response to climate change. The aims of this project are to elucidate what impact these changes have on the ecosystem properties of a native pasture. This is important, as it will allow likely problems caused by global climate change to be predicted by increasing the understanding of the underlying mechanisms as well as improving the management of grasslands in an environmentally sustainable way.
