The ultimate aim of this project is to rationally design and optimize new types of environmentally-sustainable, cost-effective and high performance microwave dielectric materials and devices for advanced information and communication technology (ICT) applications. This is a designated National Research Priority area. Our fundamental understanding of dielectric materials and their properties will be enhanced considerably by working on this project. Further, we will promote the relationship between the fundamental science of polar crystalline materials and practical applications. If successful, the results will enhance Australia's capacity and standing in this highly competitive area. Read moreRead less
The effects of local strain on the crystal chemistry of solid solutions. The concept of the solid solution, the substitution of one kind of atom for another in a crystal structure, is a central idea in both mineral sciences and solid state chemistry. Such atomic substitutions alter local crystal chemistry and hence always introduce strain into crystal lattices. In this project we aim to characterize this substitutional strain. Ultimately this should lead to a better understanding of the geologic ....The effects of local strain on the crystal chemistry of solid solutions. Such atomic substitutions alter local crystal chemistry and hence always introduce strain into crystal lattices. In this project we aim to characterize this substitutional strain. Ultimately this should lead to a better understanding of the geological history of rocks, improvements in metal recovery from ores and to the design and synthesis of new materials.Read moreRead less

Facilities for spectroscopy and diffraction at high pressures. The provision of infrastructure for the study of novel materials under high pressures will enhance Australia's capability in creating new materials and in creating new devices that meet needs in communication, environment and medicine applications. The new facility will enable researchers to understand the response of structures to extreme pressures and will exploit the unique capabilities of the synchrotron light.

Hydrogen fuel production from electricity and water sources, such as sea water, represents the ultimate goal for the research described here. This is part of an overall scheme, called "Artificial Photosynthesis", to generate clean renewable energy. The present project is an important step in this ambitious program and directly addresses a key hurdle which must be overcome to make artificial photosynthesis feasible. This hurdle is the efficient electrical conversion of water into hydrogen and oxygen, a two part process of which the latter is the most chemically difficult. The project aims to 'steal nature's secrets', by deciphering and then technologically mimicking the highly efficient means by which plants carry out these processes.Read moreRead less

However, they are toxic and can damage the environment and cause significant health problems. Enzymes are currently being used to treat runoff water that is contaminated with OPs. The same enzymes also have the potential to aid in the treatment of OP poisoning. However, OP degrading enzymes could be improved in many ways - we will evolve these enzymes to enhance their catalytic properties - to enable them to act more efficiently on an increased number of OPs. Although these OPs were designed to kill insects they are closely related to chemical warfare agents and are known to be toxic to humans. Bacteria have acquired a number of enzymes that degrade some OPs. One such enzyme has been used in field trials demonstrating its potential to degrade OP residues. However, many pesticides are not removed rapidly and OP-degrading enzymes require modification(s) if they are to be useful environmental reagents - this can be achieved with directed evolution. Optical floating-zone furnaces are powerful and efficient tools for the discovery and characterisation of new materials. They are widely used in the solid-state chemistry, condensed-matter physics, materials science, and engineering communities. This optical floating-zone furnace, the first in Australia, will support and encourage the growing number of local researchers in these fields. It will allow them to take much better advantage of the new research reactor and synchrotron being constructed in Australia by maximising their ability to grow crystals of technologically and scientifically important materials, particularly electronic and magnetic materials, for fundamental and applied research at those facilities.Read moreRead less
