The aim of this research project is to achieve a better understanding of the operation of electricity markets, through advancing our understanding of how the physical system, the industry structure, the market mechanism and the behaviour of the market participants jointly determine the overall system outcomes. A particular focus of the research is on competition within the market. We want to understand the ways in which market structure influences participant behaviour and, in particular, the circumstances that lead to non-competitive outcomes.Read moreRead less

Australia faces some critical decisions with regard to its commitment to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. There are a variety of emissions-related trading schemes that operate at a State level, and there are now proposals to introduce a National scheme. This research will help in the design of an emissions trading scheme through the use of sophisticated models of the behaviour of individual generation companies operating in a complex market situation. Also this project will build the skill base of Australia in an area of increasing importance where a multi-disciplinary focus is critical.Read moreRead less
A modelling challenge: bridging the gap between molecular and neuronal networks. We will develop innovative frameworks, which unify small-scale molecular activity with electrical signals in branches of brain cells. Our small, but very productive group (up to 30 publications per Discovery grant) has reached critical mass (8 people), and the acquisition of essential infrastructure is peremptory. Without the proposed plasma reactor our strong international impact (10 papers, one invited, at the 2003 world conference on photovoltaics) will wane. This machine permits to deposit thin layers of silicon nitride and amorphous silicon and is a versatile tool for investigating silicon materials for photovoltaics and microelectronics. Such reactors have become an essential tool for silicon solar cell work. Most laboratories across the world have at least one, including UNSW, but access to the latter is impractical.Read moreRead less

The purpose of this project is to make available to the Australian semiconductor research community a facility to undertake specialist deposition and etching tasks needed for fabrication of next generation solar cells, microelectronics, optronics, and micro-electromechanical systems. The facility will have the flexibility to allow independent control of major process parameters, allowing development of new fabrication technologies which will be generic to a wide range of semiconductor materials. In particular, the facility will be unique in its ability to perform processes at low temperatures, and under conditions that allow optimisation of the deposition and etching processes, without compromising the performance of delicate devices or exceeding the maximum process temperature limitations found in many mainstream semiconductor materials technologies.Read moreRead less

The project will facilitate the potentially rapid and widespread deployment of Electric Vehicles (EV) in Australia with considerable social, economic and environmental benefits. The economics of our current road transportation sector are adversely impacted by rising and volatile oil prices. The near total reliance of the sector on an inherently limited and increasingly imported resource also has energy security implications. Road transport is also responsible for a significant proportion of Australian greenhouse emissions. EVs represent an extraordinary opportunity to address these challenges. However, widespread uptake will hinge on our ability to effectively integrate EV charging into the Australian electricity industry.Read moreRead less

Security, defence, agriculture, medicine are a few of the fields where THz science and technology are booming. THz developments offer enhanced national security, prosperity and quality of life. Australia has active researchers in THz concentrated at several centres across the country, but they are hampered by their work by lack of access to state-of-the art experimental equipment. This project will provide that equipment and ensure the nation remains internationally competitive in this rapidly-developing field.Read moreRead less
